(No Model.)
A. T. PETTITT. DRAFT EQUALIZER.
No. 460,487. Patented Sept. 29, 18-91.
1980,9151 JZZZeLfi Z Z 912 1 2% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT T. PETTITT, OF WARNERVILLE, NEBRASKA.
DRAFT- EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,487, dated September 29, 1891.
Application filed January 15, 1891. Serial No. 377.882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT T. PETTITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warnerville, in the county of Madison and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft-equalizers for horse-powers; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction and by means of which the draft shall be equally distributed between the teams.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a plan View of a draft-equalizer constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line at a: in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the connecting link or casting.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
Upon the main shaft of the horse-power, which is designated by 1, is mounted a lever or sweep 2, which extends on diametricallyopposite sides of the shaft, as Will be clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To the outer ends of the sweep 2 are pivoted the levers or draft-bars 3 3, to the outer ends of which the whiffletrees 4 are attached in the usual manner.
5 designates a casting consisting of a link,
which is mounted upon the main shaft 1 above are mounted upon the pins or bolts 10, by means of which the levers or draft-bars 3 are connected pivotally with the ends of the sweep.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The link or casting 5, it will be observed, has a sliding movement upon the main shaft 1. In the event of one team pulling less than the other the draft will thus be equalized, and the tardy team will at the same time be led up by the leadbar 9, which is thrown in a forward direction, as will be seen by the dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings. The construction of this device is simple, and it may be readily applied to horse-cars or baling-presses, and for other purposes towhich horse-powers are customarily applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In adraft-equalizer for horse-powers, the combination of the sweep mounted upon the main shaft, the draft-bars pivoted to the opposite ends of the sweep, a link mounted slidingly upon the main shaft and having its ends connected pivotally with the inner ends of the draft-bars, the lead-bars mounted pivotally upon the pivotal bolts of the draft-bars, and a brace-rod connecting the said lead-bars with the inner ends of the draft-bars and the sliding link, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of thesweep mounted upon the main shaft, the draft-bars mounted pivotally upon opposite ends of the sweep, the leadbars mounted upon the pivotal bolts of the draft-bars, the brace-rods connecting the leadbars with the inner ends of the draft-bars, and a link connecting the inner ends of the said draft-bars, substantially as set forth.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of the sweep mounted upon the main shaft, the pivoted draft-bars, the leadbars, the braces connecting the latter with the draft-bars, and a link or casting mounted slidingly upon the main shaft above the sweep and provided at its ends with brackets connected pivotally with the inner ends of the draft-bars, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT T. PETTITT. Witnesses:
J; KOENIGSTEIN, J r., WILLIA KOENIGSTEIN.
