JAMES MIOKLE, OF FORT EDXVARD, NEXV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. HARRIS, OF SAME PLACE.
ANTI-INTERFERING DEVICE FOR HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,396, dated September 29, 1891.. Application filed February 4, 1891. Serial No. 380,183. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: preferably composed of a piece of firm leather Be it known that I, JAMES MICKLE, of Fort bound with cloth and padded on the inside, Edward, in the county of Washington and Where the strain comes, and provided on the State of New York, have invented certain new outside with suitable attaching device, such and useful Improvements in Anti-Interfering as a button or buckle Z), as shown. The boot Devices for Horses; and I do hereby declare is also provided with a suitable number of that the following is a full, clear, and exact securing-strapssay two-which secure the description of the invention, which will enaboot above the ankle. ble others skilled in the art to which it apper- The anti-interfering device or attachment IO tains to make and use the same, reference beconsists of an elastic flexible section 0, pref- 6o ing had to the accompanying drawings, and erably a tightly-coiled spring, as shown, atto the letters of reference marked thereon, tached firmly at its upper end to the strap cl, which form part of this specification. which strap is provided with the perforations This invention relates to certain improveshown to receive the buckle or other fasten- I 5 ments in anti-interfering devices for horses. ing device on the boot. The lower end of It is a well-known fact that horses, in travthis elastic section is suitably secured to the cling rapidly or speeding, lift the hind feet foot, preferably by the means shown, wherewith the toe drawn inwardly, thereby causing in the lower end of the spring or other elastic the horse to cut his quarters and interfere, section is formed with a loop or eye 6 to re- 20 and also the front feet are so moved as to ceive the headed stud f on the outer side of cause clippingof the shoes. This interfering the upper end of the L-shaped metal piece g. of the feet of course injures the horse, Wears This L-shaped coupling piece or bracket has the shoes, and to a certain extent retards the the lower flat arm bent at its inner end at h, speed of the horse. so that this lower arm can be placed between 25 Heretofore certain devices have been emthe hoof and horseshoe when the shoe is be ployed to prevent this interference, but in ing placed on, with the upper arm of the most respects they are not satisfactory, being bracket bearing against the outer side of the cumbersome or expensive, or necessitating hoof, andthe bent end It will firmly hold the extra exertion on the part of the animal when bracket against withdrawal or movement 0 running, or being dangerous in case of acciafter the shoe has been secured. This atdent. tachment is used, preferably, on the outer The object of my invention is to provide an side of the foot and leg. The tension of the improved, simple, cheap, durable, and exceedelastic portion can be easily graduated by inglyefficient device which will positivelypremeans of the strap and fastening means on 3 5 vent all interfering, cutting of quarters, and the boot, and the attachment can be easily clipping of the forward shoes, and which can and quickly removed by simply releasing the be easily and quickly attached or detached. strap and then turning the elastic section at These objects are accomplished by and my right angles and removing the loop from the invention consists in certain novel features headed spur of the metal securing-bracket. 40 of construction and in combinations of parts This bracket remains on the foot and does more fully described hereinafter, and particunot in an y Way interfere with the horse when larly pointed out in the claims. the spring attachment is removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, The device can be manufactured cheaply Figure 1 is a view of a foot and portion of and is adapted for use for all kinds of horses 45 a leg of the horse, showing my invention deand is intended for use on both front and 5 tached. Fig 2 is a detail perspective. Fig. rear feet. 3 is a detail section showing a mode of at- This device attached on the outside of the taching the device to the horses foot. foot and leg draws the foot outwardly when In the drawings, reference-letterctindicates the horse is traveling, and thereby causes it 50 a suitable shin and ankle boot. This boot is to strike the ground flat and level, and also too draws the feet apart, thereby preventing all clipping of shoes, cutting of quarters, and all interference. It also strengthens the muscles by creating a uniform strain on the outer and inner sides of the leg, and it does so Without in the least retarding the motion of the horse, but ratherincreasing his speed. It also prevents the horse from knocking the forward knees.
' I do not wish to confine myself to the spiral spring, as I may use any elastic portion or section which will roll or draw the foot outwardly, such as rubber, or rubber and spring combined, and there may be other means employed for making connection with the horses foot.
It is evident that various slight changes and modifications might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention. Hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but
That I claim is- 1. The combination, with aboot, of a strap secured thereto, an angle-iron or device for securing the boot to the foot of the animal, and an elastic connection intermediate the strap and clip, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the boot, of an adj ustable strap secured thereto, an angle-iron or clip for inserting between the shoe and hoof of the animal, and an elastic connection intermediate the strap or clip, such connsction being detachable.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
