- E. G. TECKTONIUS. BAND PASTE-NEE.
No. 459,421. Patented Sept. 15,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL C. TECKTONIUS, OF RAOINE, VISOONSINQ BAN D-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,421, dated September 15, 1891,
Application filed March 31, 1891. Serial No. 387,159. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL O. TEoKToNIUs, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to improvements in band-fasteners; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device for securing metallic bands or hoops around wooden tanks, cisterns, or similar vessels and to retain such bands in position by frictional contact between themselves and the outer walls or surface of the vessel, thus obviating the use of rivets or similar fastening devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide for the easy and expeditious removal of an old ordefective band and the substitution therefor of a newband, and to provide for the adjustment of the band.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a band or hoop having the ends thereof inclined to form hooks, of two castings or plates, each of which is provided on its lower side with an inclined slot or recess to receive one of the hook-shaped ends of the band and on its upper side at each end with an upwardly-extending lug, and a coupling-rod extending through suitable passages in the lugs of the plates or castings and connecting the same, the outer ends of said coupling-rod being screw-threaded, and receiving-nuts which bear against the outer ends of the castings, whereby when the said nuts are turned the castings or plates are forced on the couplingrod toward one another and the ends of the band drawn closer together to cause the band to bind tightly around the vessel on which it is placed.
My invention further consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
To enable others to more readily understand my invention, I have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is asectional view through a portion of a wooden vessel having my improvement applied thereto. Fig. II is a detail plan view of one of the castings inverted, and Fig. III is a detail view of the band. I
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings, referring to which A designates a tank, cistern, or similar vessel about which is placed a band or hoop B, The ends of the band B are bent upward and inclined to form the hooks b b.
C C designate two plates or castings, the lower surface of which is shaped or curvedto bear firmly against the side of the vessel A. Each of said plates is provided on its lower face, near one end thereof, with a longitudinal recess or groove 0, in which one end of the band is adapted to fit, and the hook I) at the end of the band extends into an inclined slot or recess d, which opens through the base of the casting at the inner end of the groove or recess 0. The plates or castings C O are each provided atthe ends with upwardly-extending lugs E E, and through aligned aper tures or passages 6, formed in these lugs, ex-
tends or passes a coupling-bar F, which connects the two castings O O. The outer ends of this coupling-rod F are screw-threaded, and on such threaded ends are fitted nuts f f, which contact, respectively, with the outer ends of the castings O O. The castings C O are also provided with outwardly-extending lugs g g on opposite sides thereof, which rest against the sides of the vessel A, and serve to secure a broad contact-surface between the castings and the vessel. The upper surface of each of the castings between the lugs E E is grooved or recessed longitudinally to receive the coupling rod or bar F, as shown.
The operation of my invention is simple, and may be briefly stated as follows: The hooks b b of the band B are fitted in the inclined slots (1 of the castings O O and the device placed around the tank, cask, or similar vessel A, the lower sides of the castings contacting with outer or exterior surface of such vessel. By turning the nuts ff, or either of them, the castings C O are moved longitudinally on the coupling rod or bar F, and the ends of the band B are drawn toward each other until the said band is contracted or drawn tightly around the vessel A, so as to hold itself in position thereon.
To remove an old or defective band, the nuts ff are turned slightly and the castings C C are drawn away from each other sufficiently to allow the band to be moved slightly longitudinally 011 the cask or vessel. Another band can now be secured in place, and the old one afterward removed by turning the nuts ff until they are free from the rod or bar F, and then removing or withdrawing said rod from the castings O C. It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple and effective means for securing hooks or bands on tanks, casks, cisterns, or similar vessels Without employing rivets or similar devices, which bands will hold firmly and will sustain heavy pressure.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction of the devices herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of myimprovements, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described and claimed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a band-fastener, the combination, with a band, of a plate or casting having a recess which opens through the base of the casting and extends upwardly at an acute angle to said base and terminates within said casting, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a band-fastener, the plates or castings, each provided with an internal inclined recess or slot d, which opens through the lower face of the plate or casting, and the upwardlyextending lugs on said plate or casting at 0pposite ends thereof and arranged in line with each other, combined with a band adapted to be secured to said casting, and a single connecting-bolt passing through said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a band-fastener, the combination, with a band, of the plates or castings, each provided with the internal inclined slot or recess d, which opens through the lower face of the casting and receives'one end of the band, and
the upwardly-extending lugs arranged at opposite ends thereof and in line with each other and each provided with a longitudinal passage, a groove formed in the upper face of the plate or casting and connecting the longitudinal passages in the lugs, a single bolt arranged in the groove on the upper side of the casting and in the passages in the lugs, and nuts fitted on said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
