C. T. SNEDEKOR.
LETTER FOR SIGNS, &c. v No. 457.976. Patented Aug. 18,1891.
SMWW
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. SNEDEKOR, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
LETTER FOR SIGNS,.&,C.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO.457,976, dated August 18, 1891.
Application filed August 6,1889. Renewed January 28, 1891. Serial No. 379,382. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. SNEDEKOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letters for Signs, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to devices for use upon signs, windows, &c., such as letters, figures, or other characters; and it consists in certain improved constructions of the same, whereby the cost of manufacture is diminished and the durability materially increased.
Another advantage which my improved construction has is that I provide the letter or other character with double faces, so that it can be applied equally well to either side of the glass of a window or sign.
In order that my invention may be perfectly understood,I have illustrated it in the accompanying drawings and will describe it in the following specification and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a letter made in accordance with my improved mode. Fig. 2 is a modification of the same, showing only one of the edges raised. Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sections of Figs 1 and 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate identical parts throughout.
In my preferred form, which I shall now describe, and which I have illustrated in Fig. 1, I construct the letter or other character with a double face, and provide each face with raised edges and with a depressed portion between them. Thus in Fig. l, A represents the letter or character, a the raised edges, and a the depressed portion. To do thisI provide a mold having projecting surfaces properly located to insure the desired depression in the letter or character to be made, and into this mold I pour a compound composed of cement, of any desired grade or manufacture, mixed with marble-dust or marble-flour and plasterof-paris in substantially equal parts.
hen
the compound has been allowed to harden sufficiently, the mold is removed and there remains the letter, figure, or other character having the desired double raised edges a and secured in place by means of cement, glue,
varnish, or in any other desired manner. Instead of having all the edges raised, as shown in Fig. 1, I may raise a single edge, as at b, Fig. 2. It is also a matter of preference with me as to whether I shall use marble-dust and plastei'-of-pai'is in combination with cement, as I may omit one of the first-named ingredients without harmful results.
It is obvious that by mixing different coloring substances with my compound I may obtain different-colored letters or characters, as desired. The characters may also be made with single instead of double faces. I also desire it to be understood that I may form my improved letters or characters from other substances than cement, if I desire, and wood, iron, or other metal, vulcanite, porcelain, and othersubstances may be employed, and given the required form in any suitable manner.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A letter, figure, or other character having more than one face, each face being provided with raised exterior edges, substantially as described.
2. A letter, figure, or other character having a double face, each face being provided with raised edges, and depressed portions conforming to the shape of said character between said raised edges, substantially as described. 3. A letter, figure, or other character having more than one face, each face being provided with a depressed portion, substantially as described. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- CHARLES T. SNEDEKOR. Witnesses:
