WITN ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEZEKIAII E. LONG, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,419, dated August 11, 1891. Application filed May 4, 1891. Serial No. 391,559- (No model.)
To all whom it n'my concern:
Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH E. Lone, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is providing the ordinary bench-vise, more especially those for cabinet-makers, pattern-makers, and machinists, with an attachment whereby lheinner or working face of the jaw may assume a vertical and horizontal plane with the opposite or fixed jaw and susceptible of being adjusted to a wedge-shaped article or to a similar article having two or more beveled surfaces or surfaces beveled on different planes, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable others skilled in the art with which my invention is most nearly connected to make and use it, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is an elevation from the back of a vise provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional face view taken on the line a: w of Fig. 2. Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views of the adjustable front piece. Fig. 7is an enlarged cross-section on the line 3 'y of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is an enlarged face view of the adjustable front piece. Fig. 9 is a cross-section on the line 2 z of Fig.8. Fig. 10 is a similar view showing the bottom in a reversed position. Fig. 11 is an enlarged cross-section on the line '2; '22 of Fig. 4.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the fixed jaw; B, the attachment, which consists of a pivoted part 0., having two slides b, in which is pivoted the adjustable faceplate c, on the outer face of which is a reversible piece d, the outer face of which forms the segment of a circle and rests against a vertical plane of the part a. To the inner face of the jaw E of the vise, which is of the ordinary construction, is attached aright and left hand support G for the face-plate for holding said face-plate to the angle of the article grasped between the jaws of the vise, which supports G are operated through the medium of cams D. The arm g is provided with holes, and it is held in position by means of passing through said holes.
The movement of the attachment Bniay be prevented or limited by means of the supports G being raised up into the recess between the attachment and the jaw. The reversible piece (I is so formed that when turned in one direction its face will correspond with the face of the jaw A, but when turned half around it will form a segment of a circle.
By the arrangement of the parts as shown in the accompanying drawings articles of almost every conceivable shape, inclination or inclinations, bevels or compound of bevel surfaces may be firmly clamped between the two jaws of thevise.
What I claim is 1. A pivoted attachment for the movable jaw of avise, the clamping-face of said attachment hinged in slides, the outer face of the attachment provided with a reversible piece whose outer face forms a segment of a circle which rests against the vertical plane of the pivoted attachment, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the movable jaw and pivoted attachment, right and left hand supports operated through themedium of an cecentric or cam.
In. testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, A. D. 1891.
