BEDCLOTHEQS-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,695, dated June 23, 1891.

Application filed January 26, 1891- To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES EDGAR AN- GELL, of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and Territory of Utah, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedclothes- Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Thisinvention is more particularly designed to prevent children from becoming uncovered when sleeping in bed and to prevent nightmare and snoring in adults and children, produced by their lying on their backs.

The invention consists in a contrivance of special construction for the above-named purposes attached to or adapted to be attached to the upper sheet or other covering of a bed and to the bedstead carrying the bed, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the drawing represents a view in perspective of the upper sheet of a bed in part, as seen from its under side, with my newly-invented contrivance applied.

A indicates the upper sheet, in part, of a bed, as seen from its under side, or it might be a blanket, quilt, or other upper bed-covering.

The contrivance which constitutes my invention may under certain conditions or requirements, as will be hereinafter explained, be attached to the upper side of the upper sheet or covering; but it is generally designed to be applied to the under side of the upper sheet or covering, and will here be described, in connection with the drawing, accordingly.

Bis a cloth or other band arranged to extend across and to be attached at or near its ends, or ends and middle, to or near the upper end of the under side of the upper sheet or cover A. This attachment is made by means of cords b b, fastened at their ends to the band and secured by a whip-grip around protuberances or balls 0, incased by the sheet, so as to make the band 13 form one or more loose body-straps cl, according to the number of children or persons intended to be covered by the sheet. vents the latter from being torn. To each end of this main band B are attached elastic extensions or webbings C, capable of hook-,

ing onto or otherwise of being attached at or near their outer end, as by eye-holes s, to screw-hooks or other fastenings on the bedstead arranged at a suitable distan ce from the head-piece of the latter. In addition to these terminal band-fastenings C, the band B has secured or attached to it at or near the center of the sheet a branch band D, arranged to extend at right angles, or thereabout, to the band B in an outward or upward direction relatively to the length of the sheet and capable of hooking at or near its outer end, as by eye-holes s, to screw-hooks or other fastenings on the head of the bedstead at a point in line with the center of the bed, or thereabout. If more than two persons sleep in the same bed, there will be more than one branch band D.

Upon the under side of the loop-like or body band B, which extends across the sheet or bed, is attachedone or more longitudinal band-slides E, on each of which, as shown for one of the two of said slides represented in the drawing, is fitted to slide partial rings or loops f, capable of readily moving on or along said slide. To each of these sliding partial rings or loops f is attached on the under side of the same a double shoulder-strap G, which is designed to be slipped over the shoulders of a child or person occupying the bed.- This shoulder-strap is curved so as to fit comfortably over the shoulders of the child or person, and is partly made up of elastic webbing g, which makes said strap sufficiently yielding to make it comfortable. By means of said double shoulder-strap, which in a measure acts as a shoulder-brace and tends to expand the lungs of a child While sleeping, the child or person has suflicient freedom of both limbs and body and may lie on the stomach or either side, but cannot lie on the back, thereby preventing nightmare and snoring, nor can the child or occupant uncon sciously get out from under the covering or kick it off. The shoulder-strap is applied to the child before the latter is put into bed, an d is then attached to the slide E.

A child having this cont-rivance applied to the bed-cover and sleeping in a crib could not possibly fall out, and two children in a bed would be prevented from crowding each other.-

When it is not desired to use any shoulderstraps G, the Whole contrivance may be attached to the upper instead of the under side of the upper sheet or cover, in which position it will effectually hold the bed-covering in place.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an upper sheet or bed-cover attachment designed to prevent exposure and disturbance in sleep, a main or body band adapted to extend across and be attached to said sheet or cover near its upper end, provided with terminal elastic extensions or Webbings adapted to fasten the cover to the bedstead carrying the bed, and further provided With an intermediate branch band extending outwardly or upwardly relatively to the length of the sheet and adapted to be fastened to the head of the bedstead, and the cord 1), extending longitudinally along the main band to secure it to the bed-covering, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the main cross-band B, adapted to be secured at its ends to the sides of a bed and provided with devices to engage the bed clothing, and a double shoulder-strap detachably' connected to said band B, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the upper sheet or cover and main or cross body-band, of one or more longitudinal band-slides thereon, a partial ring or loop fitted to slide on or along each of said band-slides, anda double shoulder-strap attached to said partial ring, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

4. The combination, with the main bodyband adapted for attachment to an upper cover of a bed, of a band-slide on said bodyband, and a double shoulder-strap loosely held on said band-slide, substantially as described.

5. The double shoulder-strap comprised in part of elastic material or Webbing, in combination with the sliding partial ring or loop carrying the same, a band-slide on which said ring or loop is fitted to slide, and the main or body band of the upper sheet or cover, essentially as described.

6. The combination, with the upper bed sheet or cover A, of the attached main or cross body-band 13, having terminal and intermediate fastening extensions and band C O D, one or more band-slides E on said main bodyband, and a double shoulder-strap G, connected With and arranged to slide on or along each band-slide, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
