INLAlD WOOD-WORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,517, dated June 23, 1891.
Application filed February 4, 1891- Serial No. 380,138. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN B. CAMERON, of lVilliamsport, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inlaid VOOd-VVork, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce an ornamental surface of inlaid Wood, which may be used for the decoration of Walls, floors, furniture, dvc.
My invention is a new article of manufacture, consisting in an open-Work grille or lattice of Wood having its interstices filled with blocks of Wood suitably shaped to fit therein, thus forming a solid slab or panel.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a grille or lattice of Wood. Fig. 2 represents said lattice with its openings or interstices filled with the suitably shaped blocks of wood shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 3 is a sectional vieW on the line 3 3 ot' Fig. 1, and Fig. e is a sectional View on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2.

The grille or lattice shown in Fig. l is constructed of strips AA, which are produced by first cross-cutting the surface of a plank or board. to give the desired configuration and then dividing said plank longitudinally. The said strips are then halved together to form the lattice.
It Will be observed that in the grille shown in Fig. l the openings between the strips are of two different patterns, as indicated atB and C. A number of blocks of Wood of the form sho-Wn in Fig. 5 are prepared and inserted in the openings B, and a number of other blocks of wood of the form shown in Fig. 6 are prepared and inserted in the openings C. These blocks are glued in place, af ter which the surface of the panel is dressed oit" smooth. The said blocks maybe stamped out of thin boards by dies, or they may be cut into shape by means of rotary cutterknives having an edge configuration conforming to that of the openings in the grille. The inserted blocks may be of Wood different from that of which the grille is made.
I claim- The method of producinga composite Wood panel or slab, which consists in first making a grille of wood by cross-cutting a plank or board to a desired pattern or configuration, then dividing said plank into strips, and then halving said strips together, and, second, inserting in the openings in said grille blocks of wood suitably shaped to fit closely therein.
