Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL CLARKSON DECKER, OF LABORATORY, PENNSYLVANIA.
OIL FOR GENERAL PAINTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,035, dated June 16, 1891.
Application filed September 24, 1890. Serial No. 366,012; (No specimens.)
.troleun1, one gallon; yellow beeswax, onefourth to one-half pound; pulverized resin, one-half pound; sulphate of zinc, one-eighth to one-fourth pound; sugar (acetate) of lead, one-eighth to one-fourth pound; litharge, onefourth to one-halt pound; linseed-oil, one-half to one pint. These ingredients are to be thoroughly mingled by agitation While in a state of ebullition.
The process of preparing the above composition is as follows: First dissolve the sugar of lead and sulphate of zinc in warm water; then add this solution to the petroleum; then heat this second solution (the oil, lead, and
zinc) to 212 Fahrenheit, and stir the compound so as to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Now add the beeswax and resin, and when these are thoroughly dissolved add the litharge and linseed-oil. Stir Well and let it cool.
The above composite oil gives a good vehiole for painters use in mixing their various paints. It is non-volatile, inodorous, and has about the specificgravity of good linseedoil. It is also a good water-proof oil, and is possessed of excellent antiseptic and pre servative powers.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A paint vehicle or oil for painters use, composed of crude petroleum, yellow beeswax, pulverized resin, sulphate of zinc, acetate of lead, litharge, and linseed-oil, in substantially the proportions herein set forth.
JOEL OLARKSON DECKER.
