BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,636, dated mm 9, 1891.

Be it known that I, EDWARD IIENRETTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a simple device facilitating the holding and releasing of bags or sacks on elevators and like devices while being filled, and this I attain by the mechanism shown in the accom' panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same with parts broken away, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the spouts of an elevator with my invention attached thereto.

The T-irons or lever-rests a are secured on the mouth of the casing of the spouts A and support on pivots Z) the levers c, with which the brad-arms d, having prongs d, are pivotally connected on pivots 0, small perforations g being provided in the casing for holding and guiding the brad ends or prongs d of the brad-arms. Now by means of the lever c the prongs of said brad-arms may either be projected or drawn in. Placing such prongs in the last-named position, the bag is drawn tightly over the mouth of the spouts, and by operating the lever c the prongs d are projected, engaging the bag and firmly holding the same. The bag being filled, a return motion of the said lever will Withdraw the prongs and release the bag. The prongs d should be inclined upward a trifle to guard against the bag slipping off. In the drawings the spouts are shown as being hung from hinges e and adjustable by means of the spring-straps f, these being some of the features of an invention relating to elevators for which I have made application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed March 6, 1590, Serial No. 353,053. This arrangement is, however, immaterial, as my invention may be applied to elevators and like devices having stationary spouts; nor is the shape of the spouts material, as the mechanism invented by me can be adapted thereto whether they are made round, square, or elliptic.

Now what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A bag-holdin device consisting of movable brad-arnis d, having prong ends (1, pivotally connected with and operated by a lever c, in combination with the elevator-spouts provided with a device for pivotally supporting the said operating-lever and having perforations in the casing thereof, holding and guiding the said prongs projected therethrough, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a bag-holding device, in combination with the spouts of an elevator, the lever c, pivotally supported on a T-iron a, secured under the casing of such spouts and pivotally connected with and operating the brad-arms d, having the prongs d, which are held and project-ed through perforations provided for that purpose in the casing of such spout-s, all substantially as described.
