M. H. SHANLEY.
COMBINED BAG HOLDER AND SIFTER.
(Application led Jun 6, 1900.)
(No Model.)
ANrrnn STATES- MICHAEL H. SHANLEY,
ATJENT FFICE.-
OF GRANBURY, TEXAS.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,275, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed J une 6. 1900.
To all whom it mayconcern:
Beit known that I, MICHAEL H. SHANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granbury, in the county of Hood and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Bag-Holder and Sifter, of which.
the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sifters for flour, meal, and the like, and has for one object to provide improved means for supporting a bag or sack in an elevated position, so that the contents thereof may be emptied directly into a sifter held beneath the bag, thus dispensing with bins and the loss of flour in the transfer from bags to the bin. It is furthermore designed to provide means for facilitating the elevation of the bag into the proper position and to hold the bag against lateral movement while the sifter is being operated.
Another object resides in the provision of improved means for supporting the sifter directly upon the bag, so that the mouth of the latter may be opened directly within the sifter.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changesin the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing a bag of iourheld in an elevated position by the present invention and supplied with a sifter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the clamp for application to the bag.
Corresponding parts in the figures of the f drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates'a bracket which is designed to be secured to a wall of the kitchen or other suitable support and provided with a pair of outwardly-directed arms 2, between which is journaled a grooved pulley or Wheel 3, over which runs a rope or cable 5. Pendent from the outer ends of the arms is a yoke 6, having Serial No. 19,281. (No model.)
a beveled cross-head 7 at the lower end thereof. A bag-engaging clamp 8 is secured to the free end of the outer portion of the suspending-rope by having the latter passed through a perforation 9, formed in the upper end of the clamp and tied or otherwise fastened. The body of this clamp is in the form of a dat plate, having a transverse shoulder or thickened lower portion 10, which projects at the rear side thereof and is provided in its upper edge with a substantially V-shaped longitudinal groove or recess 11. Projecting laterally outward at the front side of the plate and adjacent to the lower edge thereof is a screwthreaded bag-piercing pin 12, upon which is slidably fitted a clamping block or member 13. Upon the outer end of the pin there is provided a suitable thumb-nut 14 to clamp the block against the adjacent face of the plate.
To secure a filled bag 15 to the suspending device, the pointed pin 12 is stuck through the lower end of the bag, the latter being iuverted for this purpose, after which the clamping-block is fitted to the pin, and then the nut is set up against the block, so as to clamp the bag between the plate and the block. The inner portion of the rope is then pulled downwardly, so as to elevate the bag, until the groove in the shoulder 10 receives the beveled cross-head 7, as best shown in Fig.
2 of the drawings, whereby the bag is held' against a twisting movement. When the bag has thus, been elevated, the free portion of the rope is engaged with a suitable clamp or catch 16, secured to the wall orsupport and located a suitable distance below the bottom of the bag in its elevated position, so as not to interfere therewith. This clamp or catch is provided with an inverted substantially V-shaped notch 17, in which the rope is received and against the opposite walls of which the rope is frictionally held by the strain caused by the Weight of the bag.
The sifter comprises a shell or body 18, which is open at its upper and lower ends and is provided with a plurality of spring-arms 19, projecting above the top of the shell and having terminal laterally-disposed sharpened fingers or prongs 20 to enter the bag, and thus suspend the sifter from the lower end thereof, so the mouth of the bag may be opened di- IOO rectly within the shell. To relieve the bag of the weight of the sitter, a suspending device is provided by means of a rope or chain 21, which has its intermediate portion passed loosely through a perforation 22, formed in the body of the clamp 8, the opposite ends of the rope having'hooks 23 for detachable engagement with perforations or other suitable means provided at the upper edge of the shell. Thus the sifter is really supported by the rope 21, while the spring-arms 19 prevent the sitter from swinging and being thereby displaced from the mouth of the bag.
Intermediate of the opposite ends of the shell there is provided a screen 24, over the upper side of which work a plurality of agitators 25, which are carried by a centrallylocated and vertically-disposed shaft 26,ro the lower end of which is removably secured a crank-handle 27, which projects laterally outward through a marginal slot 28, formed in one side of the shell of the sifter. The bottom of the shell is normally closed by means of a removable bottom plate 29, heldin place by means of a pin and bayonet-slot connection 30, or in any other preferred manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a bag of iiour or meal may be conveniently elevated into position and held against swinging, and the sifter may be applied to the bag so as to remain thereon until the contents thereof has been entirely sifted, when a new bag may be substituted. By means of the spring suspending-arms 19 and the flexible rope 21 the device is applicable to bags of diierent sizes. A suitable handle 3l is provided upon the exterior of the shell, so as to rigidly support the latter during the operation of the sitter.
Vhat is claimed is- 1. The combination with a supportingbracket, of a bag-engaging device, a bag-elevating device mounted upon the bracket and connected to the bag-engaging device, and a cross-head carried by the bracket and located in the path of the upward movement of the bag-engaging device, said bag-engaging device being interlocked with the cross-head in the elevated position of the bag-engaging device, whereby the latter is held against accidental swinging.
2. The combination with a supportingbracket, of a bag-engaging device having a substantially V-shaped groove or recess, elevating means for the bag-engaging device and mounted upon the bracket, and a beveled cross-head carried by the bracket and arranged in the path of the bag-engaging device to be received within the groove thereof.
3. The combination with a supportingbracket, of a pulley-wheel mounted thereon, a transverse and beveled cross-head pendent from the bracket and below the wheel, a rope passing over the pulley-wheel, and a bag-engaging device having a lateral shoulder, provided in its upper face with a substantially V-shaped groove to receive the beveled portion of the cross-head, in the elevated position of the bag-engaging device.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting-bracket, of a bag-elevating device mounted. thereon, and a bag-engaging clamp connected to the elevating device, and comprising, a body, a screwthreaded bag-piercing pin projecting outwardly from the bodyand having its outer end pointed, a movable clamp member slidable toward and away from the body and upon the pin, and a thumb-nut carried by the pin and clamping the movable member against the body.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a supporting-bracket, having a beveled cross-head, of a bag-elevating device mounted upon the bracket, and a bagengaging clamp, comprising a body, having a lateral shoulder upon its inner side and provided with a substantially V-shaped groove to receive the beveled portion of the crosshead, a lateral pointed andv screw-threaded pin projecting at the opposite outer side of the body a movable clamp member slidable upon the pin, and a thumb-nut.
6. The combination with a support, of a bag-holder connected thereto, a sitter located ing connection between the sifter and the bag-holder, and bag-engaging devices rising l from the sitter.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aliixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
