UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER C. PALMER, OF BANTAM, CONNECTICUT.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR USE IN MILKING COWS. 4
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,498, dated June 2, .1891.
Application filed January 26, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER O. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bantam, inthe countyof Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Use in Milking Cows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the invention and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the fender-- board. Fig. 3 is a vertical section, and Fig. 4t is a top view, of head part of stall.
This invention has relation to safety devices for use in milking cows; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to provide a frame-work of such construction as will insure safety to the milker and prevent the cow from overturning the pail, and at the same time to make this frame-work of such construction and. to provide it with such suitable gearing as will enable the operator to conveniently adjust the device in any stall.
In the accompanying drawings, A indicates the head part of the stall, and the cow is shown with itshead inclosed in the stanchions, one bar of which is fixed, and the other bar a is movable and extends through and a little above the top timber of the head-frame, and which may be fastened or unfastened by means of the latch b, in the end of which a rectangular notch is out to partly surround the upper end of the movable bar a.
C is the movable milking-chair, and is of the following, construction: Two broad side pieces 0 c, with the cross-piece d, all fastened firmly together, form the frame proper. The lower front portions of the pieces 0 c are provided with slots 6 e for the reception of the adjustable fender-board D. The fender-board is introduced in the slot in either side and is pushed through in front of the cows hind Serial No. 379,154. (No model.)
legs and into the slot in the opposite side piece, and is provided with notches ff, whereby it is sufficiently secured, and thus danger from the kicking of the animal is averted. Near the base and on the outer face of each side piece 0 is a flange g, which serves as a rest for the sliding foot-rail E, which foot-rail prevents the cow from stepping back or kicking. Guides h h serve to keep this rail in normal position, allowing only a rectilinear horizontal motion.
On the inner face and near the base of each side piece 0 is pivoted a locking-lever it, provided on its base with projecting pins 00 :12, whereby the foot-rail E may be secured in any desired position. Also on the inner face of each side piece 0, at about the levelof the floor of the stall, is fastened a guide-bar m, which projects forward beyond the front edge of the side piece 0 and serves as a guide and rest for the sliding shelf at, which in turn serves as a rest for the pail or receptacle for the milk.
At 12 in one side piece is fastened one end of a rope provided with a hook at the other end. The rope is of such length that it may be passed over the back of the animal and caught or secured in an aperture or around the edge of the other side piece.
The milking-chair rests on rollers which permit it to move forward and backward in each stall, and at the same time it is suspended from an overhead beam or other suitable device by means of ropes passing through the eyes 0 0, whereby it may be moved along the series of stalls.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a safety device for milking cows, the combination of the movable frame consisting of the two upright side pieces and the top cross-piece, the removable fender-board held by the side pieces, the sliding and adjustable foot-rail, the locking-levers 7a, pivoted to said side pieces and adapted to hold said foot-rail in adjustment, and the shelf or pail-rest in front of and supported by said side pieces or arms therein, substantially as specified.
2. The device for the purpose herein doscribed, comprising the frame supported on In testimony whereof Iaffix my signatuie in rollers and suspended from an overhead suppresence of two Witnesses. port, said frame having the fender-board rev 1 movably held in slots in the side pieces there- CHRISTOPHER C. PALMER. 5 of, the adjustable and sliding foot-rail, and the shelf or pail-rest supported by said side pieces Witnesses: or arms thereof, together with a back strap HIRAM STONE; or cord, substantially as specified.
