SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,273, dated June 2, 1891. Application filed February 28, 1891. Serial No, 383,214. (No model.)

rangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows, on an enlarged scale, a side view of a button or stud embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the same at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a similar View with a portion of the bent arm in section. Fig. at shows a view, similar to Fig. 8, of a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 shows a detail view of a binding-collar and of a binding-ring adapted to be used in connection with the button or stud in different locations. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the device, showing the flange on the arm removed and a binding ring or disk forming the double function of a binding and a flange.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the head of the button or stud, which may be of any preferred form or design and provided with a curved post or shank B, of equal dimension throughoutits length and of any desirable shape in cross-section. The post or shank B is curved in the arc of a circle and on it a bent arm O is mounted to slide. The said arm 0 comprises a sleeve 0, bearing on the shank B, and a foot 0, extending at an angle from said sleeve. The sleeve 0 is formed with an opening 0 in one side, through which the shank B has movement, and said sleeve is bifurcated, as at 0 to any desirable extent and in any location thought expedient to provide the same with resiliency or elasticity. The upper end of the sleeve is formed with a flange D, through which the bifurcation is extended, and on the said flange is mounted a binding-collar E, which is swaged down over the flange to hold the upper portion of the sleeve and prevent spreading thereof, and also to provide a frictional hear ing on the shank B, if desired. The collar E may be placed under the flange and upset over the upper surface of said flange. As shown in Fig. 4:, a flat or round ring is substituted for the collar E and placed under the flange, the latter being then swaged down over said ring to accomplish a similar binding. In either form a gradual taper may be given to sleeve 0, which narrows from the flange thereof downward to thereby provide frictional con tact of the sleeve with the shank B and avoid the use of lockin gdevices, and flaring of the upper portion of said arm prevented. The said shank B may be provided with a suitable device to prevent disengagement of the arm O therefrom. The button or stud is adapted to be inserted in the button or stud hole from the face side thereof and automatically fasten itself therein as pressed inward. As seen in Fig. 6, the sleeve of the arm 0 is not of itself provided with a flange D; but by applying a ring or disk to the upper part of said sleeve a flange is formed thereby and at the same time the binding is attained. The ring or disk in this instance isapplied in any suitable manner.
The parts heretofore described are simple and readily assembled and produce a button or stud of strong construction. The binding of sleeve 0 by application of the binding collar, disk, or ring to the flange thereof, as set forth, produces a hearing or shank B of such nature as to allow of free movement of the arm 0 on said shank with suiflcient frictional engagement to prevent too loose play of one part on the other.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new is l. A button or stud having a curved shank, a slotted bent arm movably mounted on said shank, and a separate piece surrounding the slotted part of said arm to bind the same, substantially as described.
