W. A. DRYSDALE. ELECTRIC DLSPLAYv BURNER EOE OIL LAMPS.
MINE m lll?.
Patented May 26, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM A. DRYSDALE, 0F PHILADELPIIIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRIC DISPLAY-BURNER FOR OILMLAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,041, dated May 26, 1891. Application lcd February 16, 1891. Serial No. 381,604. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern;
Be it known that l, WILLIAM A. DEYsDALE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Electric Display-Burners for Oil-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide lamp-dealers and others with an acceptable form of burner whereby an electric lam p can be employed in connection with the reservoir of any ordinary form of oil-lamp for lthe purpose of displaying the appearance of the lamp and lamp-shade when said lamp is lighted. This objectI attain in the manner hereinn after set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a side view of my irnproved electric display-burner for lamps; and Fig. 2 is avertical section of the same, partly in elevation.
In many stores in which lamps are sold, especially the expensive lamps and shades such as are now sold by jewelers and art dealers, the use of oil in the lamps while the latter are on exhibition is objectionable, and it becomes desirable to use electric lamps for the purpose of displaying the appearance presented by the lamps and shades when said lamps are lighted. I-Ieretofore this has been done in a crude way by suspending an ordinary electric lamp above the reservoir and beneath the shade of the oil-lamp, but thisprecludes the use of a chimney, and is at best a makeshift plan, and is objectionable.
In carrying out my invention, therefore, I make a burner A, which is, so far as regards external appearance, the same as the burner of an ordinary oil-lamp, and is by preference provided with achimney-holder a., and at the lower end a threaded iiange Z), for screwing into the usual threaded collar on the lamp, although other means of attachment may be used, if desired. In place of the usual wicktubes, however, I mount within the burner an ordidary form of electric-lamp socket B,
the conducting-cable for supplying current thereto passing through a projection CZ (preferably insulated) on one side of the burnercasing, or in such other part of the same as may be most convenient, and the switch-op erating stem f of the socket is connected to a rod g, which passes through an opening in the burner-casing, and has at the outer end a milled head h., similar to that of the wickraisin g shaft of an ordinary oil-burner. By this means the electric lamp is securely mounted upon the reservoirand occupies the same position as would the name of the oil- `lamp, and a chimney can be used and an ornamental shade can be displayed with pre cisely the same eifect as it will have when in actual use. Moreover, the electric lamp socket is hidden from ordinary view, as is alsothe lamp, when the shade is applied, and the light can be turned onv and off by lnanipulating a knob at the side of the burner in the same way as in raising or lowering` the Wick of the oil-lamp.
I therefore claim and Letters Patentl. The withihdescribed electric displayburner for oil-lamps, the same comprising the electric lamp, its socket, and an outer casing inclosing and hiding said socket, the whole being constructed for application to the reservoir of an oil-lamp, substantially as specified.
2. In an electric display-burner for oillamps, the combination of the electric-lamp socket with a casing therefor having an opening for the conductor and means for securing said casing to the reservoir of the lamp, substantially as specified.
3. In an electric display-burner for oillamps, the combination of the electric-lamp socket with a casing therefor constructed for application to the lamp-reservoir and having a holder for a lamp-chimney, substantially as specified.
et. In an electric display-burner for oillamps, the combination of the electric-lamp socket having a switch, with the outer casing for said socket constructed for application to an oil-lamp, a conductor extending through the casing, and a rod connected to the switch-stem and also extending through said ou ter casing, said rod having at the outer enda knob or button, substantially as specilied.
In testimony whereof I have signed Iny name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. DRY SDALE.
