UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER HEWLETT HICKS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE MORGAN ENVELOPE COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOILET OR WRAPPING PAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 453,003, dated May 26, 1891. Application tiled December 30, 1889. Serial No. 335,443. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER HEWLETT HICKS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet or Wrapping Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this To specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
In the use of the ordinary roll of perforated toilet orwrappin g paper the portion unwound from the roll is apt to be separated so close 5 to the body of the roll as to render it difficult to find the new end when it is desired to detach the next sheet.
It is therefore the object of my present invention to so form the roll as that the act of unwinding a sheet or portion for detachment will automatically unwind the next succeeding sheet or portion and bring it into position to be conveniently grasped when it in turn is desired to be detached. This object I accomplish by forming the roll of a web of paper of a width equal to two or more ordinary sheets or pieces of paper and providing it with both vertical and transverselines of weakness, the latter extending only part way across the go web and so positioned as to break joints with each other, thus in effect dividing the web up into two or more longitudinal series of nudetached sheets that break joints with each other. In so me instances I provide each sheet or portion of the web with a transverse line of less weakness than that which unites the sheet to the body of the web, so that when the sheet is detached it may be conveniently folded at its middle on the said line of weakness, and thus afford two superposed layersa well-recognized desideratnm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of a roll of paper formed from a web prepared in accordance with my invention, a portion of said web being shown unwound. Fig. 2 is a front view of said roll, illustrating the mode of removing-sheets therefrom; and Fig. 3-is a view of the modified form of web in which the sheets are provided with the intermediate line of less weakness.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
The letter A represents the web of paper, having the vertical and transverse lines of weakness. The verticalline of weakness may be produced by slitting the web, as at B, leaving only the narrow connecting portions C or otherwise, while the transverse lines of weakness may be produced in any suitable way, as by a series of straight cuts 1, wave-like cuts 2, angular perforations 3, single cuts 4:, round perforations 5, or otherwise.
The intermediate cuts of less weakness represented by 6, Fig. 3, may be of any of the forms illustrated in Fig. 1 or of any other form, thconly requisite being that they must be relatively stronger than the lines of Weakness between the sheets proper. By pulling upon the end of one of the sheets-as, for in-' stance, A in Fig. 2-said sheet is unwound from the roll till its transverse line of weakness is exposed, when it parts on said line from the body of the web and comes off in the users hand. By the time the separation takes place, however, the next adjoining sheet 7 5 A is drawn out sufficiently to be left in convenient position to be grasped when it is in turn to be separated, as will be readily understood.
I claim as my invention-"- A Web of paper provided with vertical and transverse lines of weakness, said transverse lines of weakness extending only part way across the web and breaking joints with each other, substantially as described.
OLIVER HEWLETT HICKS. Witnesses:
