ASSIGNORS OF ONE-HALF TO P. M. WICKSTRUM, OF SAME PLACE.
END-GATE.
SPEGFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,905, dated May 26, 1891.
Application iiled December Z0, 1890. Serial No. 375,367. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, JONAS A. LIND and PERAS E. ANDERSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Clay Centre, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful End-Gate,of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in end-gates.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive end-gate adapted to be readily applied to the ordinary construction of wagons without changing the latter, and capable of being readily removed without interfering with the top side-boards and top end-gate of a grain-wagon or similar vehicle.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed ont in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an end-gate constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied in operative position to a vehicle. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the sections unlocked preparatory to removing the end-gate. Fig. b is a horizontal sectional View, the part being in position shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a wagon-body, the sides 2 of which are provided at their rear ends with vertical parallel cleats arranged on the inner faces of the sides and forming ways and adapted to receive an end-gate et in the ordinary manner.
The end-gate 4 is composed of two sections 5 and 6, connected by hinges 7,secnred to the inner faces of the sections and adapted to per- Init the sections to swing outward at theirinner ends to withdraw their enter ends from engagement with the cleats. The section 5 is provided with a transversely-arranged eye S, having a threaded stem passing through the section and engaged by a bolt 9 on the inner face of the section 5. The section 6 has secured to its inner hinged end an arm 10, projecting from the section 6 and adapted to lap over the section 5, and provided in its enter end with an opening 11, arranged to receive the transverse eye 8 when the sections are in alignment, and secured to the outer face of the arm is a spring-actuated bolt 12, sliding in lugs 13 of a plate let. The plate 11i is provided with an opening 15, registering with the opening of the arm 10, and the said plate 14 has a projection 14, formed integral with the plate and arranged at one side of the opening opposite the lug 13, and is adapted to support the end of the bolt. The bolt 12 has its rear end 1G bent at an angle to form a handle, and it is provided intermediate its ends with a projection 17, against which bears a spring 1S, which is arranged upon the bolt and interposed between the said projection and the rear one ot' the ears 13 and .adapted to hold the bolt in engagement with the transverse eye to keep the sections straight and in alignment and prevent them becoming disengaged froin the parallel cleats of the wagonbody.
Frein the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
What we claim isrlhe combination, with a wagon-bod y provided with the ordinary cleats 3, of an endgate composed of hinged sections having their outer ends adapted to engage the said cleats in the usual manner, the eye arranged on one of the sections, the arm secured to the other section and projecting from its inner hinged end and provided with an opening to receive the eye, the plate 14, having the opening and provided with lugs, the spring-actuated bolt arranged in the lugs and adapted to engage the eye, and t-he projection 141, formed integral with the plate and arranged at one side of the opening thereof and adapted to sup port the end of the bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
J. A. LIND. P. E. ANDERSON.
