NUT-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,865, dated May 26, 1891.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER JOSEPH KANEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Ouachita and State of Arkansas,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to nut-locks; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a bolt having my invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side View of a bolt with my invention attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the band-spring. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the key.

My-invention is described as follows: In an ordinary bolt A longitudinal grooves a are cut in the thread. These grooves have one side straight and the other beveled, as shown in Fig. 1. A nut B, having the extension b, is provided with a perforation b',in which is placed a key 0. Said key has on its upper end the extension 0 and shoulders c, and one side of the lower end is beveled and the other is straight, adapted to work in the grooves a of bolt A. Said keyis held in place by a bandspring D, having in its ends the slots d, adapt ed to work over the extension 0 and on the shoulders c of the key 0, and said key, passing around the periphery of the extension I) of nut B, firmly holds said key down against the thread of bolt A. When the nut is being screwed down, the elevations on the bolt A, working against the beveled side of the key C, raise it and pass under it and the straight sides of said bolt catch in the said grooves a and prevent the nut from returning. I have only made four grooves in said bolt, but a greater or less number may be used; indeed one groove only will be sufiicient, in which case thin washers may be put under the nut to secure the proper adjustment.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a nut-lock consisting of the perforated nut B, key 0, and band D, the band D separate from and extending entirely around the nut and engaging. the key 0, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with a bolt A, having a thread and a groove a, and a nut B, having a perforation b, a nut-lock consisting of a key 0, having an extension 0, and a band D, extending around the said nut and having perforations d, its perforations fitting on said extension 0, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
