PATENT, frr cni IMPROVEMENT IN FEEDING. FURNACES. 7
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. @5527, dated May 16, 184d. 7
, the city of Baltimore, in the county of Bitllllmore and State of Maryland, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in the. Method of Feeding. Furnacesjfor smelting, 850.; and I do hereby declare that the following is'a full, clear, and eXa tdeScripi-icm ofthe principle or character thereof which distinguishes it from all other thingsbefor'e known, and'of the manner of making, constructing, andnsing the same, reference being had to the acc'om panying drawings, makingpart of this specification, in whichv f Figure lsis an elevation of a smelting-fur;- aiacewith my improvements applied thereto, *and Fig.1 2 a vertical section-of-thesame. l The same letters indicate like parts in all Hi smelting and-other furnaces for there" duction and working of iron the whole of the ore','fiux, and fuel are generally'intmduced thronghthe topof the stack, which is attended with much inconvenience, particularly when additional fuel isto be introduced, for
instead of supplying-the combustible where the greatest intensity "of heat is required, it. mustbe introduced. "above the charge and gradually'settl'e down,- and as it is deemed im portant frequentlyto add more flux or change its quality to suit the nature or condition of. y the. ore, and to supply fine coal, mineral or vegetable, or both mixed, with the view to in- -crease the intensity of theheat, and also to introduceth smalllurnpsof ore, which, if introduced. above, have a tendency to choke the draft, it has beer suggested to employ for these purposes, a tunnel bytheside off-and; communicatingiwith the 'lower' part of the stack below =the'boshes, to deliver whatever ma be desired a little above the tuyere; but
this so far has failed,-in consequence of the 1e n dency tostop up-the delivery-aperture of this tunnel or feeder, and hence fail 'in the Su pply. Ieffe'ctu'ally remove this difficulty by inc i-is of my improvement, which consists in mating the feeding-tunnel wlth a lateral b11114 h provided with a piston operated by \)lil( first mover, which, .as it reciprocates,
pcrmits a portion of the charge to fall byits gravity from the vertical part of the feeder into the lateral branch, and then forces into the furnace. This effectually prevents the choking heretofore experienced and-admits of an easy neans of regulating the supply. Y Theaccoinpanying drawings represent-myimprovement as applied to the common smelting furna'ce or cupola, in whichais the stack, b the .tuyere-holes for the introduction-of the blast, and c "the -vertical portion of the feed-. 'ing-tunnel, of sufficient capacity, if desired, to -"contain' all the additional charge. The upper p'ar't,d, is provided with avalve or shutter,
;e,.for the ,ihtroducti'onof the extra charge,
and to admit of-clo'sing the top to prevent the escape-of any gases therefrom. The lower part communicates with an inclined tube, f, I that leads into thefurnace between the tuyeres and the boshcs, and i-;-;--alap'tctltotlie-reccp Y tion of a piston, g, whichis connected by means of a rod, h, with a cranlgi, on a shaft operated byfsome first mover. stroke of this piston should'be sufficient to pass from under the aperture'of-the vertical part of the feeder,,and force down into the furnace all that may havefallen into the inclined tube; 1
To prevent ed by a jacket at k, with a space, '1, for the circulation of water, which is admitted through. the aperture m and discharged at n.- The piston g is made hollow for alike purpose, and
the water may be made to circulate throughit by. a siphon-tube; butany-other mode of con ducting the water to andfrom this hollow p is-v ton may be substituted.
zontal, and the piston should be so connected with the driving machinery as to be under'the control of the attendant to regulate the feed; *ing, which may be effected either by means of cone-pulleys, a fast-and loose pulley, or any other known mechanical device." v
It will be evident that this mode of feeding can be applied'to other furnacess uch as the puddling, the refinery, &c.-by simply adapt -v ing-the formof the parts to the different construction of these; but I deem its application to the cupola or smelting furnace of the great est importance,
I do not claim as niyxinvontion feeding fur- .lhe length of thethe injurious effect of the high temperature of the furnace on that portion of j the tube nearest the furnace, it ,is' surroundscribed, whether the furnace be for smelting or for other purpcses, as herein described.
