UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. PARKINSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I IALF TO JOHN R. BAUM, OF SAME PLACE.
TIME REGISTER OR INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,728, dated May 19, 1891. Application filed January 14, 1891. Serial No. 377,763. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: whether he be present or not exactly at the Be it known that I, THOMAS JlPARKINSON, time the men reported for duty, to ascertain a citizen of the United States, residing at the fact, and as it is generallythe'custom not Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and to allow day workers when late to go to work State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain within fractions of an hour after the proper 5 5 new and useful Improvements in Time Rcgtime to report, the gate in the railing inclosisters or Indicators; and I do hereby declare ing saidindicator being closed after the proper the following to be a full, clear, and exact time to report and not again opened until the description of the invention, such as will ennext succeeding hour thereafter, he can by to able others skilled in the art to which it perinspecting and taking an account from the 60 tains to make and use the same, reference indicator from hour to hour keep the time being had to the accompanying drawings, each man reported. which form a part of this specification, in Iwill now describe myinvelitioinreference which being had to the accompanying drawings, I5 Figure 1, Sheet 1, indicates a front elevaforming part hereof. 65 tion of indicator-frame. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of B B B are series of rods or bars extending the same. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the transversely of said frame or partition, the 'same, showing position thereof when workman ends of which are suitably supported in the is in. Fig. 8, Sheet 2, is an en- O, &c., corresponding with the number of emlarged side sectional elevation of a modificaployes. Fig. 9, same sheet, is the orifices or openings a a a, &c., in said a rear elevation of the same, this and the preframe or partition, the outer ends of said arms 80 ceding figure showing position of the inditerminating in hooks adapted to receive the cator when workman is out. Fig. 10, same removable checksD D D, & c., the upper ends sheet, is the same, showing position of checks of which are provided with oblong openings on indicator when workman is in. to admit of this Said removable checks are 3 5 My invention relates to devices for indi of equal number and are correspondingly 85 eating or registering the presence or absence marked with those hung or loosely journaled of workmen at any time during the day, and upon the bars or rods on the opposite side of particularly at such times as they usually rethe frame or partition. Upon the upper sur port for duty. In almost all large workshops it face or face of said checks hung upon the rods is the custom to designate the workmen by nuis marked the proper numeral, and the word morals, small wooden or metal checks being In may also be printed thereon, the reverse used for this purpose, a separate check bearside having the same numeral and the word ing a certain number being given each work- Out. The removable checks or those taken man when he reports in the morning and 1e by the workmen have numbers corresponding turned to the office ortime-keeperin the evenwith those 011 the corresponding checks jour- 5 ing or at any time he ceases work during the naled or hung upon the rods, and are considday. erably heavier than the same, whereby when The object of myinvention is to obviate or the workmen report in the morning and take greatly lessen the liability to lose or mislay their respective checks the corresponding the checks, and to enable the time-keeper, check upon the rod is enabled by gravity to zoo fall, exposing the face thereof bearing the numeral designating the workman just taking the removable check; also, said word In indicating that the workman so designated has reported and is at work. In the event of his returning his check the superior weight thereof throws the journaled check upward, exposing the reverse side with the numeral and the word Out, indicating either that he has not reported at all or has stopped work before his day was finished.
If desirable, the modification shown on Sheet 2 may be used. In said modified form a rack for the reception of slips bearing the day and month and the various times when employs late may go to work thereafter may be formed between said rods or bars and the numeral upon the check journaled on said bars be formed in heavy type, adapted when said check drops or is thrown up to make an imprint upon a pad placed before said slip. WVhen this form of register is used, the removable checks are made correspondingly heavy with those journaled on the bars as said journaled checks are adapted to make an imprint on said pad when in either position-first-, when the removable check is removed by the workman when he reports, the weight of the typecheck itself being sufficient to make said impression, and, second when said removable check is returned. Its superior weight throws the type against said pad, thus registering upon said slip the time said removable check was taken off and returned by the workman designated by it, enabling the clerk or time-keeper by inspecting and removing the same from hour to hour to keep an accurate account of the time each workman reported.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a time register or indicator, the combination of an upright frame having series of openings in the same, a number of rods or bars extending transversely said frame, the ends thereof being suitably supported in the sides of said frame, a series of metallic checks either side of which is provided with a number, said checks having arms projecting through the openings in said frame and journaled or hung loosely upon said bars, and a series of removable metallic checks of equal number and having corresponding numerals with those journaled 011 said rods, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 10th day of January, A. D. 1891.
THOMAS J. PARKINSON.
