To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES C. MAGEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Beer-Pumps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improvement in a tap or pump for beer, &e., the same having a plug which may be inserted in a keg, barrel, &c., and a tube adjustably fitted in such plug, an air-space existing between said tube and plug, so that the beer or fluid may be subjected to pressure, the tube being connected with a discharge-pipe, a form of which is shown in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 117,857, dated August 8, 1871.

The presentinvention consists of a device, as hereinafter described, adapted to be connected with the aforesaid plug and the discharge-pipes for the fluid, the said device having a head located on the top of a chain bered portion which is provided with branches, said head being adapted to receive the blows of a mallet or other similar tool for driving the tube into position.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a beer pump or tap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the heads of the device and portions of the branches thereof on an enlarged scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a plug, within which is a tube B,between which and the plug is a passage or space, whereby by means of a nozzle connected with said plug air may be forced into the keg, &c., so as to exert a pressure on the fluid therein, said parts in general respects having been heretofore in use. Extending from the top of the tube B is a shell forming a chamber B, having the branches C C, with which are connected pipes D, whose upper ends are provided'with faucets or cocks E, the latter being located in a bar-room or other desired place of service. The pipes D have cocks F for cutting off or letting 011 the supply of fluid from the branches C. Rising from the top of the walls of the chamber B is a head G,which is cast or formed hollow with a closed top B so that when the tube is driven into the keg, &c., the blows are received on the top B whereby the branches C, especially at their places of connection with the shell of the chamber B, are not injured, and the battering in of the top B will not materially injure said chamber and interfere with the flow of fluid into the branches.

The operation is as follows: The plug A is inserted in the opening in the keg, &c., and the tube Bfitted into said plug and adjusted the required depth by means of a mallet, hammer,&c.,struck upon the head G. The pipes D are then coupled with the branches C and connection is made with the air-pressure device, whereby the pump or tap is ready for service,itbeingseenthatowing tothe branches 0 the beer or fluid may be drawn from the keg, dvc, through the two faucets or cocks E, the latter, as is evident, being serviceable simultaneously or separately, as desired. It will also be seen that the head G occupies a position cent-rally between the branches 0, so that blows thereupon may be exerted directly downward on the tube, thus avoiding fracture of the device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A shell havinga chamber and side branches leading therefrom, in combination with a head which is located above said shell and having a chamber provided with a closed top, said shell being adapted for operation with the tube and plug, substantially in the manner described.
