UNITED STATES Fries.
HANS P. CLAUSSEN, OF MILIVAUKEE, IVISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRUNO NORDBERG COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FRlCTlON CLUTCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of I Letters Patent No. 451,728, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed September 13, 1890. Serial No. 364,836. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.- and connected on opposite sides of their ful- Be it known that I, HANS P. CLAUSSEN, of. crums with the shanks of the jaws D D in Milwaukee, in 'the county of Milwaukee and such manner that when theinwardly-project- State of Visconsin, have invented certain ing arms of said levers are carried toward the new and useful Improvements in Frictionfriction-wheel A the jaws D will be moved Clutches; and I do hereby declare that the into engagement with its rim a, and vice versa. following isafull, clear, and exact description The foregoing parts constitute the main of the invention, which will enable others features of a well-known clutch, and I make skilled in the art to which it pertains to make no claim thereto per se.
[O and use the same, reference being had to the F F are bell-crank levers, which are ful- 6o accompanying drawings, and to the letters of crumed to a collar G, mounted and axially reference marked thereon, which form a part adjustable upon the hub c of the jaw-carrier of this specification. C. The arms f of the levers F are arranged The main object of my invention is to proto engage with and operate by contact the 15 vide clutches of the class herein shown with leversE for the purpose of closing the jaws means of adjustment by a single operation, D against the rim of the driver A,springs (Z whereby the gripping-jaws will be caused to or other devices being arranged to open said properly engage with the friction wheel or jaws. Instead of the levers F operating the driver and to produce auniform engagement levers E by contact, they may have a positive 20 of the friction-surfaces. connection therewith, so as to move themin It consists, essentially, of the combination, both directions, and thereby open as well as with gripping mechanism substantially like close the jaws D. (See Fig. 4c.) The collar that herein shown and described, of levers G is held from turning on the hub c by a spline for operating the jaws fulcrumed to an axor feather g, and is adjusted thereon by means 25 ially-adjustable collar or sleeve, and of a raof the nut g. The longer arms of levers F F dially-movable collar linked to said levers so are connected by links h 7t with a collar II,

The collar H, having radial play In the accompanying drawings like letters upon the sleeve 1, equalizes the force exerted designate the same parts in the several figures. through the connecting-levers upon the jaws Figure 1 is an axial section of a clutch to D,causing an equal and uniform engagement which my improvements are applied. Fig. To take up play or wear on the friction- 3 is a similar section on the line y y, Fig. 1, surfaces of the clutch and to cause the jaws 5 showing the clutch in connection with a pulto grip moreor less tightly the interposed rim ley, and Fig. 4: is a detail showing a modifiof the friction-driver, the collar G is moved cation of the lever connections for operating by means of the nut g axially in the required the jaws. direction on the hub of the jaw-carrier, there- A represents the friction wheel or driver by adjusting by a single operation the ful- 4o keyed or otherwise suitably fastened upon the crums of levers F, so that when the sleeve I c shaft B, and formed or provided with a lateris brought nto the position 1n which it is ally-projecting flange or rim a. shown in Fig. 1 the levers F, acting upon and C isa jaw-carrier comprisingahub c, which through the levers IE, will properly close the is keyed or otherwise fixed upon the shaft B jaws upon the rim of the friction-driver.
45 and radiating arms 0 c, to which the jaws D The clutch shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is par- 5 D are attached by a sliding connection, perticularly designed for connecting or coupling mitting of their radial movement into and out shafts in line with each other; but with little of engagement with the rim a of the friction or slight modification the same construction wheel or driver. I maybe employed in connection-with a pulley,
50 E E are levers fulcrumed to the arms 0 c, as shown in Fig. 3. For this purpose the jawmo carrier A is formed or provided with a beltrim a,and is loosely mounted upon the same shaft on which the jaw-carrier C is keyed, being held in place thereon by the hub of the jaw-carrier and a collar (not shown) fixed to the clutch-shaft on the opposite side.
Referring to Fig. 4, the levers F are connected by links f with the levers E, which are fulcrumed to the jaw-carrier and are pivoted on opposite sides of their fulcrums to the jaws D, so as to positively open as well as close the jaws.
I claim 1. In a friction-clutch, the combination, with the friction-wheel having a laterallyprojecting rim and radiallymovable jaws adapted to grip said rim, of levers adapted to close said jaws and fulcrumed to an axiallyadjustable collar, whereby play or wear may be taken up by a single operation, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a friction-clutch, the combination, with gripping mechanism, substantially as described, of operating-levers and a collar which has radial play upon the clutch-shaft, whereby equal and uniform engagement of the friction-surfaces of the clutch is produced, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a friction-clutch, the combination, with gripping mechanism, substantially as described, of an axially-adjustable collar, operating-levers f ulcru med to said collar, whereby play and wear are taken up, and a radiallymovable collar with which the operating-levers are connected, whereby equal and uniform engagement of the friction-s11 rfacc is produced, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a friction -clutch, the combination, with clutch mechanism comprising a frictionwheel having a laterally-projecting rim, of a j aw-ca'rrier provided with radially-adj ustable jaws, and levers fulcrumed to said carrier and connected with said jaws so as to simultaneously close the same, a collar mounted and axially adjustable upon the clutch-shaft, bellcrank levers fulcrumed to said collar and ar ranged to actuate the levers fulcrumed to said carrier, a sleeve movable axially on theclutchshaft, and a collar mounted and having radial play upon said sleeve and linked to said bell-crank levers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In a friction-clutch, the combination,
with a driver having a lat-erally-projecting rim and gripping mechanism comprising a carrier, radially-movable jaws mounted upon said carrier, and levers fulcrumed to said carrier and connected with said jaws so as to close the same against the rim of the driver, of a collar adjustable axially upon the clutchshaft, and levers fulcrumed to said collar so as to connect with and actuate the levers on said carrier, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HANS I. CLAUSSEN.
