. R. P. BARKER. PULLEY FOR BAND SAW MILLS.
g No. 451,590.
Patented May 5,1891.

PULLEY FOR BAND-SAW MILLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l51,590, dated May 5, 1891. Application filed December 2, 1890. Serial No. 373,336. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN FRANCIS BARK- ER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sagola, in the county of Iron and-State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys for Band-Saw Mills; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of sawingmachines in which a band-saw is used in sawing lumber, and it relates more particularly to that class of band sawing-machines which are adapted for use in sawing large logs or timbers.
It has been found that in saws of the character referred to the cutting-edge of the saw will expand to a much greater extent than the opposite edge of the saw, thus rendering it necessary to frequently remove the saw from the pulleys upon which it travels and subject the same to the process known as pounding. It has also been observedthat where the saw is passed over pulleys having a flat or smooth surface, which forms a bearing-surface for the entire width of the sawband, it is found to be necessary to more frequently submit the saw to the pounding ing process than in the case where the face of the pulley is provided with a central peripheral groove, and I have discovered upon experimenting that the width of such groove upon the pulley, in order to accomplish the best results, should be varied in accordance with the width of the particular saw to be used. It is at once evident that in case the pulleys were provided with a permanent or fixed groove it would be necessary to provide each machine with a number of sets of pulleys, and that when saws of different widths were used it would necessitate the removal of the pulleys and the substitution therefor of other ones having a groove of the desired width. Nhere the band-saw which is used is provided with cutting-teeth upon both of its edges, as shown in the ac companying drawings, I have found that it is essential, in order to insure the best possible results, that the groove should be beneath the longitudinal center of the saw-blade, hence rendering it necessary, in devising a pulley which may be equally well adapted for use with saws of different widths, that the por tions of the periphery of the pulley upon each side of the groove should be made adjustable.
The present invention has for its object to provide a band-saw pulley which may be readily and quickly adjusted, so as to meet the requirements of saws of different widths and will be also adaptedto use with saws having cutting-teeth upon both of its edges.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction of the pulley, whereby the peripheral groove may be readily varied in width, the portions of the periphery of the pulley being adjustable in either direction,
as desired.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bandsaw mounted upon pulleys constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the pulleys upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View of a portion of the rim of the pulley.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the up per pulley, and B the lower one. leys differ only in size, the lower pulley being the larger. The rim 0 of the pulley is provided adjacent to its outer edges with a series of narrow lines or marks a, which extend entirely around the periphery of the pulley at uniform distances apart and serve as gages for regulating the adjustment of the rings D, as will be readily understood. The rings D, which are placed upon each side of the slot or groove E are held in place upon the rim 0 by bolts F, passed through the rings and extended through the elongated slots on openings G, formed in the said rim, the lower end of the bolt being provided with nuts G. At intervals the rings D are con- These pulnected by means of the rods ll, which are screw-threaded at their ends and have their screw-threaded ends inserted within suitable screw-threaded openings formed in the rings, and at their centers the said connecting-rods are provided with turn-buckles II, which serve as a means whereby the rings may be forced either nearer together or farther apart, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, with a band-saw having cutting-teeth upon its opposite edges, of the saw-pulleys provided with a peripheral groove, the rings D, forming the side walls of the slot, being adjustable, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. A pulley for band-saws, provided upon the outer face of its rim with two adjustable rings, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a band-saw pulley the outer face of the rim of whiehis provided with annular marks a adjacent to its outer edges, of the adj ustablc rings 1), carried by the pulley, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4-. lhe combination, with a band-saw pulley the rim of which is provided with transverse slots G, as described, of the rings upon the face of the rim, and the bolts l passed through said rings and extended through the slots in the rim, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a band-saw pulley and the rings sleeved upon the outer face of the rim, of the screw-threaded rods H, connecting the said rings and provided with turnbuckles, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN FRANCIS BARKER.
