BARRELCLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,415, dated April 28, 1891 Application-filed February 26, `1891. Serial No. 382,954. (No model.)
lo all whom, t may concern: B is the removable or hinged head or cover, Be it known that I, HARVEY C. STROUT, of made, preferably, of wood, the bottom portion Peabody, in the county of Essex and State of a being made circular in form and re-en Massachusetts, have invented certain new forced -by an upper portion a', the grain of 5 and useful Improvements in Barrel or B0X which is arranged at right angles to thc grain 55 Closures, of which the following, taken in of the lower portion.
connection'with the accompanying drawings, The head or cover B has firmly secured is a specification. thereto at one side the metal hook c and at My invention relates to barrel or box closthe opposite side the metal stud (l, said hook [o ures; audit consists in certain novel features and stud being each provided with or formed 6o of construction, arrangement, and combinaupon broad fiat plates or webs e, which are tion of parts, which will be readily underinserted between the upper and lower porstood by reference to the description of the tions of said cover and rmly secured therein accompanying 'drawings and to the claim by screws e and the bolts ff. The plates or 15 hereinafter given, and in which my invention webs of the hookc and stud dmay be united in 65 is clearly pointed out. one piece and extend entirely across the cover,
Figure l of the drawings is a plan of a as shown, or they may be made separate and barrel having my invention applied thereto. extend only part way across said cover, as in- Fig. 2 is apartial section of the same on line dicated by the dotted lines g g', Fig. 1.
2o fr on Fig. 1f: Fig. 3 is a partial section of The body of the receptacle A has rmly 7o the removable cover on-line y y on Fig. l. secured thereto upon one side the plate h, Fig.4 is an elevation of the hinge connections provided with the ear h-, which has formed and small portions of the barrel and cover at therein a threaded hole to receive the threadthe right of Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a sectional eleed lower end of the eyebolt C, in the upper 2 5 vation of the eccentric-fastening at the other end of which is formed the elongated eye or 75 side of Fig. l, the cutting-plane being on line slot c', which receives the hook c, as shown in- .e' e on Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the Figs. l and 4. Y eccentric. To the opposite side of the receptacle A is Many inventions have been made having firmly secured the plate j, provided with two 3o for their object the closing of barrels in such projecting lugs j j', with a space between 8o a manner as to render them liquid and air them of sufficient width to receive the shank tight, and at the same time so that they can 7c of the eccentric-strap D, whichshanl: le is be easilyand expeditiously opened and closed, threaded and has fitted thereon the nut k', which necessarily renders the barrels eXpenthe upper surface of which engages with the 3 5 sive. under sides of the lugs j j', as shown in Figs. 85
There are some uses for which a barrel or l and 5. The stud d has mounted thereon other receptacle having a removable or easilythe eccentric E, the inner end of which is fitopened head or cover that can be readily and ted to the opening in the strap D, as shown iirmlysecuredin closed position and as readily in Figs. l and 5, said eccentric being held in 4o opened when required but without necessaposition on said stud by the washerl and 9o rily being air or liquid tight, would be very screw Z', as shown in Fig. l. By this condesirable-such, for instance, as transporting struction a comparatively cheap and very ashes and other like substances. To provide effective receptacle-closure is obtained that such a receptacle that shall not be too eX- can be readily and easily operated, and that 45 pensiveis theobject of my present invention. will be very useful for transporting ashes 95 To this end I make and attach the closing and other dry or nearly dry substances. head or cover of the receptacle as shown in The nut 7.a is readily adjustable on the the accompanying drawings, in whichu threaded stem 7c of the eccentric-strap D, and A represents the body of the barrel, box, or the eyebolt C is also readily adjustable in 5o other receptacle. the threaded ear h', by which adjustments roo the cover inay be made to close the rcceptacle very tight.
In some cases I prefer to so attach the cover to the receptacle that when opened it will remain connected to said receptacle, in which case I extend the hook c so as to practically form an eye thereof, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The eyebolt C being properly adjusted in the ear t and the nut 7e being properly adjusted on the shank 7a of the eccentricstrap D, the hook c is engaged with the eyebolt C and the cover A is placed in position on the :mouth of the receptacle. The shank of the eccentric D is swung into position between the lugs jj, with the nut k beneath them, when the eccentric E is turned into the position shown in Fig. 5, and the receptacle is securely closed, it being understood that when the shank of the eccentric-strap is moved into position for its nut to pass beneath the lngsjj the eccentric E must be in the position the reverse of that shown in Fig. 5. To unclose the receptacle, the eccentric is turned to relieve the pressure. The lower end of the shank 7c is moved outward to withdraw the nut 7.1 from beneath the IUgSjjQWhen the cover is free to be removed or swung over to the opposite side of the receptacle.
I claim- In a closing device for barrels or other receptacles, a cover having secured thereto at one side a projecting hinge hook or eye and at its opposite side a projecting stud, a plate provided with an ear having a threaded hole therein secured to the body of the receptacle upon one side, a threaded eyebolt fitted to the threaded hole in said ear and engaging at its perforated end with said hinge hook or eye, a plate provided with two projecting lugs secured to the opposite side of said receptacle, an eccentricA mounted upon said stud, an eccentric-strap fitting said eccentric and provided with a threaded shank, and an adjustable nut fitted to said shank and arranged to engage with the under surfaces of said lugs, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 20th day of February, A. D. 1891.
HARVEY- C. S'IROUT.
