SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,152, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed December 2, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings Centre, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Horse-Power, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention has relation to a horse-power 5 and the objects in View are to providea power that is light, cheap, and portable and designed to use for running various kinds of machinery either on a farm or in a mill, which reduces to a minimum the friction of parts, avoids the use of expensive gearing and other complicated elements, andincreases the power applied previous to its transmission to the point of use.
With the above objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a horse-power constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in transverse vertical section of the reel. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective, enlarged, of one end of one of the reel-arms. Fig. 4 is a detail in vertical longitudinal section of the jack.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The frame-work of the reel comprisesa base 1, suitably staked or otherwise anchored to the ground, floor, &c., and from the same rises a pair of vertical standards 2, the upper ends of which are tenoned 'in and connected by a table 3. The table 3 is provided at its center with a bearing-opening 4, and vertically below the same a bearing 5 is formed in the base. A vertical shaft 6 has its lower end stepped in the bearing 5 and its lower cylindrical half journaled in the bearing 4, above which the shaft is squared, and has fitted thereon,immediately above the bearing 4, a hexagonal or other polygonal hub 7. Each of the faces of the hub is provided with mortises 8, and in the same are fitted tenons 9, formed on the end of a radiating reel-arm 11. The reel-arms 11 are connected in pairs by means of stays l2 and 13, the stays 13 being located near the outer ends of the-arm and the stays 12 near their inner ends or about Serial No. 373,283. (No model.)
midway, so that a horse may be hitched to singletrees located upon the arms connected by the stays 12. One stay 12 has one end provided with a slotted tenon 14 and passed through a mortise 15 of an adjacent arm, and in the slot is driven a wedge-shaped key, by which the series of stays may be tightened up or made rigid with each other.
To the upper and lower sides of each arm are secured flared guide-plates 16, and the ends of the arms are notched to receive a cable. The front sides of the arms at their ends are provided with cable-engaging plates 17, the outer ends of which have V-shaped notches 18. 19 designates an upper hub, also of hexagonal or polygonal shape, and upon having pivoted between its bifurcations an inclined brace 21, the lower end of which is secured to an arm 11. Wedge-shaped keys 22 may be inserted between the upper ends of the arms 21 and the brackets, and thus said arms secured in position. By this means the arms are held rigid and cannot move.
At one side and slightly in rear of the reel is located the jack and its frame. The frame consists of apair of cross-sills 23, transversely mounted, and in the same is seated a pair of longitudinal sills 24:, said cross-sills being suitably anchored to the ground or floor. From the longitudinal sills 24 rise vertical standards 25, located at each-end of the same, which standards are connected by a pair of longitudinal bars 26. Near the rear ends, in suitable bearings, is journaled a transverse shaft 27, upon which is mounted a large pulley 28, adapted to be provided with abelt leading to any machinery to be operated. Upon the same shaft 27, at one side of the pulley, is mounted a star-wheel 29, the arms or spokes of which are provided with V-shaped grooves, and have set therein metal plates 30, having V-shaped notches. In one of the bars 26, directly in front of the star-wheel 29 upon a stub-shaft 32, is mounted a grooved guide roller or pulley 33.
Upon a vertical shaft 34, located upon the inner side bar 26 or that next to the reel, is loosely mounted a flanged guide-pulley 35, and upon alaterally-disposed supporting-arm 36 is loosely mounted a guide-roller 37. In
line with the grooved pulley 33 is a grooved guide-pulley 38, mounted upon ashaft- 39, projecting from the upper endvof a standard 40, and in an inclined arm 41 there is mounted a loose guide-roller 4:2 in line with the pulley 38.
In operation a cable-chain is passed around the series of arms under the guide-roller 37, about the flanged pulley 35, over the pulley 33, under the star-Wheel and over the same, under the pulley 33, up over the pulley 40, and under the roller 42, thence back to the reel. The rollers 37 and 42 are in direct line with the arms of the reel, so that as the reel revolves by one of a series of horses the cable passes in the direction indicated, operates the power-shaft 27, and as the cable is released by one arm passing beyondthe pulley 37 it is taken up by the preceding arm approaching the roller 42.
Having described my invention, What I claim is- 1. The combination, with the jack provided with suitable guide pulleys and rollers, of a frame-work located in front of the same and at one side thereof, a shaft journaled in the frame-Work, a series of arms radiating from the shaft and provided with flared plates secured to their upper and lower sides and at their front sides with notched cable-receivin g plates 17, and a cable mounted in the arms and passing over the guide-rollers to the jack, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a horse-power, of a jack-frame located in rear and at one side of the first-mentioned frame,apoWer-shaftjournaled in the j ack-frame, a belt-pulley mounted thereon, a star-Wheel mounted on the shaft and having notched arms provided with plates having V-shaped recesses, a horizontal and a vertical guide-pulley located in front of the star-Wheel, a second horizontal pulley located in front of the first horizontal pulley, guide-rollers mounted in front of the vertical and the horizontal pulleys and in the plane with the arms of the reel, and a cable passing around the arms about the guide-rollers, the guide-pulley, and to the star-Wheel, over the same, under the horizontal guide-pulley, over the front horizontal guide-pulley, and back to the cable-arms of the reel, substantially as specified.
