Description

UNITED Six/Arras PATENT Fries.
JAMES MARSHALL, 0F STOGKPRT, CCUNTY OF GHESTER,GREAT BBITAIN.
APPARATUS FOR APPLYING AnHEsivpANo LUBRICATING MATERIAL'TO THE sPlNoLEs of sement-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,108, dated November/'15, 1864-.
To all whom it may concern: v j Beit known that I', Jantes :MAnsnALn of Stockport, in the county of Chester,v United KingdomL of Great Britain and Ireland, cotton-spinner, have invented certain Improvements in Apparatus t'orApplying 4Adhesive Substances toSpinllle's Employed in Spinning Cotton and other lFibrous Materia-ls, and for the Lubrication Thereof, of which the following .is a specification. i
The invention relates to a description or apparatus now employed for the purpose of applying adhesive substance to the spindles upon which cops are formed, in order tocause the threads to adheretogether and to retain their position when removed fromthe spindle,
an d thus to form a solid bottom to the cop, which ,diminisiiies the Waste. The adhesive subst-ance has in some instances been applied by means of a brush supplied from a box or receptacle, which is caused 'to traversesfroni one end of the spindle-carriage to the other When commencing a cop in front oi the fspindles by means of an endless band actuated by mechanisni.
My improvements consist, rst, in causing the traverse of suoli box or receptacle behind the spindles, which is mbre convenient, and in effecting the tra-verse liy finca-ns of the friction ofthe spindle, for which purpose l employ a piece or pad of leather, india-rubber, or other suitable material, secured.v to the front ofthe box, which pad is in contact with the spindles, their revolution leiiecting the nuove nient ofthe box.
Secondly, the invention consists 'in' the novel employment and usev of a receptacle containing oil or lubricating' material in the saine position,4 and actuated in a -sirnilar manner to that before described, and supi-- `plying the lubricant to the bush of the spin" dles in its traverse either by means ofabrush or sponge, in which case the sponge is belenT the pad.. .s Y Y .In order that the invention may be better understood and explained in detail, I have 4hereunto.' attached a sheet oi' drawings., made upon a scale of about six inchesito the foot,
` similar letters of reference. being marked thereon Figures 1 an'fl 2 represent, respectively, a` front and end view of that part of the spindle carriage to which isl applied the apparatus for supplying .adhesive substance to the spindles, and which traverses from end to end of the carriage, andin its course supplies the spindles with the material at the commencement v.of forming of the cops. l Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe saine. Fig. 4 is an end sectional View of the receptacle for the adhesive substance,
terior of the box d is 4s'o forined as to tit or correspondV With the bevel of #che rib c to prevent it leaving the rib, and the interiorl is di-` vided longitudinally by apartition, the upper cavity or chamber'forneing a receptacle for paste or adhesivevsubstahca t'helower cavity being for the receptionof the friction-pad e,
-composedvof india-rubber, leather, gotta-v percha, or other slightly elastic material, mounted on a piece o metal loosely tting the aperture which adapts itself to the vary- .ing angle of the spindles; it may also, it' required, be rendered adjustable, so aste in'- crease or decrease the friction pn theispindles, as by increasing or decreasing suoliv friction the length of the traverse` of the boxon the rail is regulated. The aperture of. the upper chamberis closed by means of a brush,'sponge,
Vor other absorbent material, f, `through :which the paste exudes and is. supplied to the spindles by means ofthe said sponge, Whichiisin contact therewith, or,to eoonoinize'space, the sponge may be inclosed in perforatedi'zzinc,
and simply dipped in thef' adhesive subst-ance and placed in the boxf I would remark that when' it is required to lubricate thebushes of.
thespindles this arrangement vi'sto be re-V versed, and the chamber containing oil or lubricant is to be the lowest and the frictionpad above, the apparatusbeing otherwise the same. f
lle-sive substances or lubrcnntsvnnd f'or lapplying' the sinne to spindles, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I- 'have signed my nnnie to this specification in the presence otl two subscribing Witnesses.
