Description

(No Model.)
A. G. HOVDE. LAMP EXTINGUISHBR.
No. 450,410. Patented Apr. 14,1891.
` NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREAS GULBRANDSEN IIOVDE, OF HOENEFOS, NORVAY.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,410, dated April 14, 1891.
Application tiled January 15, 1889. Serial No. 296,430. (No model.) Patented in Belgium October l5, 1888, No. 83,370.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREAS GULBRAND- SEN HOvDE, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resident of IfIoenefos, in the Kingdom of Norway, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Extinguishers, (for-which I have obtained Letters Patent in Belgium,
No. 83,370, dated October 15, 1888;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to lamp-burners in which a round disk is employed above the round-wick tube to spread the flame and give it a more or less spherical form, and particularly relates to the means whereby the disk may easily be lowered down upon the wick or the wick-tube and thereby cause the flame to be extinguished. This lowering down of the llame-spreading disk is effected by a part having an inclined surface, such as a cam or wedge, upon which the support of the disk, under which the said part is situated, rests by gravity, thereby simplifying the construction and materially decreasing the cost of manufacture without impairing the efficiency of the apparatus. When arranging the same in such manner, the ,lamp-burners may be utilized in their present shape without undergoing other alterations than having a few slots cut in them or the like.
In the annexed drawings are shown two forms of the said lamp-extinguishing device embodying the principle of the invention.
In both cases the disk falls down by its own weight as soon asadevice having the inclined surface that keeps the same in appropriate position above the Wick has been moved away. This device is a wedge in one or the other form. The employment of a Wedge is preferably used, as it greatly facilitates the elevating of the disk to its ordinary position when the lamp is burning.
In Figure l is shown a lamp-burner of the said description, and where the above-mentioned disk has sufficient diameter to cover the wick when lowered down upon it. The
disk D is fastened on top of tube CZ, sliding within a tube t in the center of the burner.` When in its elevated position the bottom of tube d rests on the horizontal part of a 5o plate p, inserted from outside into the burner and outside provided with a handleh of some preferable shape. The inner end p of this plate is wedge-shaped, and it is easily seen that when the plate is drawn outward so that the point of the wedge has passed the tube t the tube, and with this the disk, will drop down, the disk D thereby putting out the flame. In Fig. 2 the same result is attained by a wedgeshaped or eccentric disk P, mounted on a spindle p', outside provided with a handle h. In both cases the diskD again will be raised by moving the handle h h in reverse direction of what was done when extinguishing the llame.
To avoid smell4 from the wick, the same should always be turned down a little before being extinguished.
vW'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. Alamp regulating and extinguishing device consisting of the combination, with the wick-tube, of a disk of greater diameter than the wick-tube and having a support, a guide therefor, a movable part situated directly under the disk-support and having an inclined surface, and an operating-handle for moving said part to cause its inclined surface to slide upon the under face of said support, substantially as set forth.
2. A lamp-extinguishing device substan-. tially consisting of a circular disk of greater diameter than the wick-tube, a tube or pin on which it is mounted, a tube serving as a guide for the latter, and a wedge arranged below the same.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREAS GULBRANDSEN HOVDE.
