CORN-HARVESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,371, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed December 27, 1890. Serial No. 375,977. (No model.)
To all whom, it Ina/y concern.-
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS ALLEN LUNDY, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Fenwick, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Harvesters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in corn-harvesters of that class wherein the corn is gathered,the ears stripped from the stalks, the husks removed from the ears, and the ears delivered into a wagon or other receptacle, from which they may be emptied in any suitable manner.
The present invention has for its objects, among others, to provide an improved device of this character, which shall be durable, cheap of manufacturaand in use most efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
Another object of the invention is to provide for the free passage of the stalks, the rollers being open at both ends and held in suitable bearings at the lower ends of arches which have slight resiliency and which are so arranged as to allow the stalks to readily pass and be guided their whole length.
Still another object is to avoid the necessity of breaking down standing corn in turning corners and to render the machine easily handled.
Other objects and advantages of the-invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The novelty in the present instance resides in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims. 7
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device complete, looking from the front toward the rear. Fig. 2 is a rear end View. Fig. 3 is a side elevation with one wheel removed. Fig. 4 is a top plan.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the main axle, l3
the frame, and C the traction-wheels, all of which parts maybe of any of the well-known or approved forms of construction.
A is the tongue, secured to the cross-bars of the frame in any suitable manner.
At the right-hand side of the machine is provided an extension at of the frame, and at C are the rollers, two in number, each having a pintle at each end and which are journaled in suitable bearings or boxes on the lower ends of the arches, as shown. These rollers are arranged at such a height from the ground as to catch the stalks below the ears. These rollers may be of any of the approved form, either smooth or corrugated or spirally grooved, as may be deemed best. Good results may be obtained from any of them.
At the forward end of the longitudinal bar of the extension I arrange a vertical post or upright ct, on which is mounted a guide-pulley b, and near the rear end of this longitudinal bar is arranged another post 19, carrying a similar guide-pulley 12 said guide-pulleys being preferably grooved so as to better hold the belt or band now to be described. This endless belt or band A is arranged to pass around said guide-pulleys and around a third pulley A which is fast upon the short vertical shaft A, which is supported in the arm 60 which extends laterally from the rear end of the longitudinal bar of the extension, as shown. This endless chain or band is provided at suitable distances throughout its length with laterally-extending fingers b which are arranged to travel just above the rollers C and guide the stalks along and between the rollers. This endless chain or band embraces the outer leg of the forward arch, as shown. The arm a is formed with a downwardly-exten din g yoke (L in the lower ends of which is journaled the shaft 0, which is arranged parallel with the longitudinal bar of the extension and carries a bevel-pinion c, which meshes with a bevel-pinion c on the shaft A, asshown in the drawings. The rear end of this shaft 0 carries a grooved pulley c for a purpose hereinafter set forth.
On the main axle is fast a pulley D, which is provided with two grooves, as seen in Fig. 4, and from this pulley, throughthe medium of cords andpulleys, which will be hereinafter described,-motion is imparted from the axle to allof theoperating parts.
Arranged parallel with the rollers C is a box or trough E, which at the. side nearest treme end ofthe bottom of the box, which is without ends, so as to permit the transverse slats or arms topass over as they approach the ends of the box or'trough. .At the rear end of this trough or box there is a dischargeopening d, beneath which at some distance is a board 61 whichextends slightly over the lower end of the elevator or conveyer E which willsoon be described.
At the-rear of the frame, near the righthand side, there is arranged a casting E, which has substantially centrally thereof a transverse shaft Eisuitably journaled in a bearing on the casting and carrying at its outer end a grooved band-pulley E and a bevehpinion E*.
F is an endless belt orba-nd passed over the pulleyD on the main axle in one of the grooves thereof and also passed around the said grooved pulley E by which motion is imparted from the axle to the said grooved pulley E and consequently to its shaft and to the bevel-pinion thereon. This bevel-pinion meshes with a smaller bevel-pinion F Y on the shaft F extended at right angles to the shaft E and journaled in suitablebearings inthe casting E. The rear end of this latter shaft F carries a grooved pulley F which has two grooves, as shown in Fig. 4, and around this pulley in one of the grooves is an endless belt or band G, which passes around the pulleys e on the rear ends of the pintles of the rollers O and around the guidesheave-sf at the upper end of the rear arch, .as shown in Fig. 2. By this means motion is imparted to the rollers C and to the pulley 0?, around which the said belt or band G passes, as seen in Fig. 2, and thus motion is impartedto the endless band or chain A through the medium of the bevel-pinions at the rear end of the extension,as will be readily understood. The endless band G also passes over a pulley f on the outer or receiving end of the right-hand shaft of the conveyer E? and over a guide-pulley F", arranged on the rear arch between the said pulley f and the pulley on the pintle of the innermost of the rollers C. The conveyer E consists of an endless chain or band, whiehpasses over the. rollers at each .endofthe trough H, the saidband or chain being provided with cross-slats h, as. seen in-Fig. 4:. :The rollers attheright-handside of the machineare on the shaft h, and those at the other end are on a shaft 71. whichis suitably journaled in the side. walls of the trough H.
t Motion is imparted to the conveyer I, which is arranged in thetrough or box E, by means .of the following. connection: The forward shaft i extendsbeyond the side, of the trough or box and has abearing in an arm or hanger 1', depending from the-forward cross-bar of the frame,and on this shaft, inside the said arm or hanger, is a pulley i, around which and around. the grooved pulley on the axle passes readily understood.
1 is a trough or boxat the left-hand side of the machine and supported at its rear end on the bracket or arm J, so that the said trough or box will incline from rear toward the front. Suitably journaled in the ends of this trough or box are the rollers K, which extend lengthwise of the, trougl1,and in this instance shown as four in number. The two outside rollers have short teeth or projections and the two center ones have, corresponding depressions or cavities. On the rear ends of the pintles of these rollers are placed grooved pulleys j, and around these pulleys and around a grooved pulley J on the arm'J and around the grooved pulley F passes an endless belt or band K, by which motion is imparted to the said rollers alternately in opposite directions. The roller or pulley J 2 is carried bya shaft or connecting-rod L, which has a swivel joint or connection at each end, the forward end being connected with the end of thelower shaft of the conveyer on the-folding elevator M, which is hinged to the left-hand side of the machine at the forward end thereof. This conveyer on the elevator consists of a suitable chain or belts, to which are attached the transverse bars 177., so that the cars will be carried upward by the said conveyer. \Vhen not in use, the elevator maybe folded down and rest upon andbe supported by the tongue, as shown When in use, it is by dotted linesin Fig. 4.
designed to be held in its position by the brace-arm N, which is pivotally connected at one end to the frame of the machine and at its other end adapted to detachably engagea lug or other contrivance 0 on the elevatorframe. The connecting-rod L should be provided with a detachable coupling of any known construction at the coupling, so as to permit of its being readily detached from or attached to the elevator when desired. At the lower end of the rollers K is arranged a curved plate or platform P, which has a curved side to prevent falling off of the ears of corn, and which table or platform forms a continuation between the rollers and the elevator. This serves as a stop to limit the elevator in its movement.
At the forward end of the frame, at the right-hand side thereof, is arranged a light wire guide P, which serves to guide the stalks to the rollers C.
The operation will be apparent from the above description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. The machine is driven around a piece of corn as one would areaper, so that a row of corn will gather between the rollers 0, being aided in this movement by the guide P, the said rollers catching the stalks in their standing condition in the field below the ears of corn there on, which will be pinched off, and the stalks will pass through between the arches. The ears fall into the trough E and by the conveyer I are carried to the elevator and delivered onto the rollers K, which constitute the strippers and which strip the husks off of the ears, the husks falling down onto the ground .between the rollers and the husked ears of corn carried down the inclined bed formed by the said rollers and onto the curved platform, and from thence they are taken up by the conveyer on the elevator M and by it carried up into awagon or other receptacle, (not shown,) which is designed to be arranged by the side of the harvester.
The parts are simple. The device as a whole is complete and most efficient in its action and not liable to injury during operation.
Various modifications in detail may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advanrages-as, for instance, sprocket chains and wheels may be substituted for the grooved pulleys and belts described and the cavities in the rollers K may be dispensed with.
hat I claim as new is-= 1. The combination, with the frame, of the arches at one side thereof and the rollers arranged between the arches, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frame and the arches, of the rollers arranged between the arches and journaled therein, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the frame and the arches, of the rollers journaled in bearings on the arches, the said arches having slight resiliency, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the frame, of the arches, the rollers journaled in hearings on the arches, and the guide at the front of the machine upon one side of the forward arch, as set forth.
5. The combination, with the frame and the v arches, of the rollers G and the endless belt having lateral'arms arranged to travel over said rollers, as set forth.
6. The combination, with the rollers and the arches, of the endless belt having lateral arms arranged to travel over the said rollers and between the arches, as set forth.
71 The combination, with the frame, of the rollers, the endless belt having lateral arms, the conveyer parallel with the rollers, the conveyers at right angles thereto, and the husking-rollers parallel to the first-mentioned rollers, substantially as specified.
8. The combination, with the frame and the husking-rollers arranged at an incline thereon, of the folding elevator and its conveyer, and the curved platform at the lower ends of the huskingrollers and forming a stop for the elevator, as set forth.
9. The combination, with the frame and the husking-rollers arranged therein at an angle to the perpendicular, of the folding elevator, the curved platform between the two, and means for holding the elevator in its raised position, the said elevator being arranged to rest upon the tongue when lowered, as set forth.
10. The combinatiomwith the frame and the rollers O, of the endless belt having lateral arms, the conveyer below and to one side of the rollers, the conveyer at right angles thereto, the husking-rollers parallel with thefirstmentioned rollers, the folding elevator, and the curved platform between the huskingrollers and the elevator, substantially as specified.
11. The combination, with the frame, of the arches at the side thereof, the rollers journaled in the arches, the endless belt having lateral arms, and the guide-pulleys on an extension of the frame and over which the said endless belt passes, substantially as specified.
12. The combination, with the frame and the, extension thereof, of the arches, the rollers journaled therein, the endless belt having lateral arms traveling over the rollers, the guide-pulleys for the belt, and the grooved pulleys on the ends of the pintles of the said rollers on the rear side of the rear arch, substantially as shown and described.
