M. V. WONOHER.
GANDLE HOLDER.
No. 450,277. Patented Apr. 14,1891.

MARTIN VANBURN \VONGHER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES MONDS AND JAMES RYAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,277, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed April 29, 1890.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN VANBURN W ON- CHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gandle-Holder, of which the followin g is a specification.
This invention has for its objects to produce a new and improved candle-holder, such as are generally used in churches or with brackets, avoiding the deposit of melted wax or parafiine and allowing a candle to be instantly replaced and firmly held while burning.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a plan View;
I 5 Fig. 2, a side elevation Fig. 3, a-longitudinal sectional elevation; Fig. i, an elevation of a detail.
My invention therefore, as constructed, is as follows: a cylinder or socket for the candle, cut into segments, or otherwise constructed so as to be capable of closing upon the candle to hold it, and the means of closing such cylinder or socket upon the candle.
My invention furthermore consists of an 2 5 outer firm cylindrical cap, through the upper opening of which the upper edge or edges of the inner cylinder just appear. This outer cylinder covers nearly the inner cylinder and has in its lower portion a spiral slot, through 0 which slot a pin fastened to the inner cylinder projects, and in normal position without candle such pin is at the lower terminus of the slot. Now, a candle being placed in the Serial No. 349,935- (No model.)
socket formed by the inside cylinder, and the outer cylinder turned horizontally so that such 3 5 pin travels up the slot of the outside cylinder, (the inner cylinder being capable of contraction, as stated,) such inner cylinder or socket is closed upon the candle, holding it fast.
A spring-bottom may be given for the candle to rest upon to the inside cylinder or candle-socket for convenience of the speedy removal of the remains of a burned-out candle. I am aware that such spring-bottoms for candle-sockets are not new; also that a candlesocket formed of a cylinder cut into segments to make it elastic or semi-elastic is also not new; but
What I claim as new, and by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, in candle-holders, of an outer cylindrical cup having a slot with an inner cylinder formed into spring-fingers for elasticity, having a peg or pin on its outer sur- 5 5 face adapted to work in such slot;
2. The combinatiomin candle-holders, of a candle-socket formed of a cylinder cut into spring-fingers and having a spring-rest for the candle, and a peg or pin on its outer surface, with an outer cylindrical cap having a slot, as shown and described.
MARTIN VANBURN WVONOHER.
