Description

F. W. ALEXANDER.
N. PETERS. FHOTO-LTNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C.
UNITEE STATES PATENT Erice.
.E XV. ALEXANDER, OE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. I
IMPROVEMENT IN BAYONETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,009, dated November 15, 1864.
.T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC XV. ALEXAN- DER., captain of the Baltimore battery of light artillery, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Form of Bayonet 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in giving to the bayonet such a form that it can be employed as a saw in addition to its use as a Weapon, thus assisting the soldier to construct abattis, breastworks, cabins, and all other Works in which the saw is a useful implement.
To enable others skilled in the vart to inake and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and application.
The pipe of the bayonet, or that part of it by which it is attached to the gun, is represented by D on the side view and Vert-ical section. This is of the size and shape of that of the bayonet now in use. The blade of the bayonet is divided into three parts, A, B, and C. A is the serrated edge or sawteeth, of the usual size for a Wood-saw, out into the lower edge of the blade, and extending to within three inches of the point and the curved portion of the bayonet, which latter may be used as a handle. B is one-third of the greatest breadthV oi' the bayonet-blade, which decreases from one and one-half inch to one inch before coming to a point. It consists of a parallelopipedon one-sixth of an inch in thickness, one-half of an inch in width, and twelve inches in length, and comprises A, being serrated on its lower edge. G comprises the remaining twothirds of the width of the bayonet-blade, and is beveled on both sides to a sharp edge, like a knife.
Vhat I claim-as my invention, and desire F. ALEX ANDER.
XVitnesses:
J. I. ALEXANDER, SEEAsTIAN BROWN.
