EDMUND JORDAN, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THOMAS V. ALLIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DIE FOR USE IN MAKING BARBED FENCING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 450,077, dated April '7, 1891..
Application filed July 2 8, 18 88 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND JORDAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination of Dies for Use in a Machine for Making Barbed Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of improved contrivances of dies for producing two barbed strips from one double blank by making successive slits along the blank through the same in continuous connection, which slits are in two parallel lines and diagonal lines extending'from one to the other of said parallel lines, making other slits in line with the parallel slits, which, together with the former slits, separate the barbed strips one from the other and form two barbs on each strip alternately, and then bending the barbs laterally to the strips for the required projection, and thus complete the production of two barbed strips with laterally-projected barbs from one double blank without other dies for completing the separation of the barb-strips; and it includes a duplicate contrivance of the said dies for producing four barbed strips from two double blank strips, and it also includes an improved contrivance of additional shearing-dies with said duplicate arrangement of dies for producing four barbed strips from a quadruple blank strip, all as follows:
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents face views of the first slitting-dies and also of the lower series of following slitting and bending dies of my invention for cutting a double blank strip and barbing the resultant strips. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper and lower dies with a blank strip between them. Fig. 3 isa diagram of a double blank strip, showing the action of the dies on it. Fig. 4: represents face views of dies, indicating the duplicate arrangement for producing four barb-strips from two double blanks or a quadrupleblank. It also represents one of a pair of shearing-dies that may be employed subsequently to the making of the barbs for separating the quadruple strip. Fig. 5 is a diagram of two double blanks, showing the ac- $erial No. 281,312. (No model.)
tion of the duplicate system of dies on it. Fig.
6 represents face views of dies, indicating the duplicate arrangement, with contrivances for slitting the quadruple blank simultaneously with and by dies located between the dies that make the first slits. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the dies for making the first slits and separating the quadruple blank, as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a diagram of the quadruple blank as cut by the dies of Figs. 6 and 7.
I make a pair of shearing-dies a I], having the cutting-edges 0 along the middle portion, and (1 near each end in differentparallel planes, and diagonal edges 6, connecting the ends of said parts 0 cl, respectively, the length of the whole of the cutting-edge being a little greater than the desired distance from center to center between the pairs of barbs to be produced on the finished strips, so that the successive slits completely separate the blank into two strips, and the distance of the planes of the edges 0 cl apart is that of the desired width of the barbs to be made. These 7 5 dies make, preferably, the first operation in the process of producing two barbed strips f from a double blank strip f, though the order in which they are arranged with other following-described dies may be so changed that their operation is later. They cut the slits c,
d, and 6 through the strip f, corresponding with the shape of the dies, as above set forth, which slits so separating the blank also cut the barbs Z along one edge and along the points. Next following are male and female parallel edged barbed cutting-dies g h, slitting through the strip in one direction-say upward-and similar dies ij, slitting through in the opposite direction, which dies, making the other slits 7c in line with and in extension of the parallel slits across the diagonal slits, separate the other uncut edges of the barbs Z from the strips so far as they are to be cut therefrom, butleaving the uncut webs m, by 5 which the barbs remain connected with the strips, two barbs (a pair) being connected by one web m alternately on each strip f These two pairs of slitting-dies together make four. slitskto one slit cd e,and together therewith me make four barbs to each of said slits-that is, two barbs on each barb-stripand they partly bend the barbs into the required lateral projection, which is perpendicular to the plane of the strips and alternately in opposite directions. After the operation of these second slitting-dies the strip thus completely out for the barbs proceeds to the two pairs of bending-dies n 0, suitably placed in the train for bending two of the cut barbs one way, and the other two reversely, which completes the making of the barbs and the production of two barbed strips f from a double blank strip.
The slitting and bending dies are duplicated, as indicated at a b, g a", and a 0, for converting two double blank strips f, Fig. 5, or a quadruple blank f Fig. 8, into four barbed strips at once, the duplicates being located side by side a suitable distance apart for so cutting the two double or one quadruple blank as will produce the said four barbed strips in the proper width, and when the quadruple blank strip is to be used apair of slitting cutters w 00 is employed to separate the quadruple blank along the line 2, which slitting-dies may be arranged next in order with the benders, as indicated in Fig. 4, or they may be arranged in advance of the slitting-dies, if desired; butfora simplerand more compact arrangement for a shorter range of dies they may be located between the duplicate slitting-dies a b and a b, as represented in Figs. 6 and 7, where they cut the slit 2 abreast of the other slits. I
hat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
