The letter A designates the furnace-chamber of the boiler, and B the line of grates of said furnace. i
D designates the furnace-door.
C designates a special combustion-chamber set above the furnace-chamber and connected with said furnace-chamber by means of a collection of draft-tubes E.
F designates a collection of draft-tubes furnishing heating-surface to the upper waterchamber of the boiler.
G designates a special watercirculation tube or tubes passing through combustionchamber C and connecting the water-chamber about tubes E with the water-chamber about tubes F.
H designates a brace-rod tying the crownsheet of the furnace-chamber to the tube-sheet forming top of boiler.
I designates the shell of the boiler.
L designates a specialfire-brickor heat-holding lining for combustion-chamber C to assist and improve the operation of the combustion of the gases. Brace-rod II passes through central water-tube G, connecting upper and lower water-spaces together.
The letter T designates a series of air tubes or ducts adapted to act as braces to the sides of the furnace-chamber A and combustionchamber C, as well as to furnish a new supply of air to the said chambers, according as it is needed to effect perfect combustion.
In the operation of this boiler the gases arising from the coal pass through tubes E space volume of chamber C. Should there 6o not be a sufficient quantity of air pass through the grate and furnace to effect-a perfect combustion, the air-tubes T permit of the entrance of a controlled quantity of fresh air to the furnace and to the combustion -chamber' C. 65
These tubes T are plugged or kept open, accordin g as more or less fresh air is required to effect the combustion of the coal-gases. After the gases have been properly consumed the draft moves the heat up through tubes 7o F, where it is taken up by the surrounding water and steam, passing out at the top to the chimney in the usual manner.
To control the temperature of `the chamber C, it may be lined with fire-brick or heat-retaining material L, which will give out heat when required to the gases within.
The sides of both furnace and combustion chambers are tapered to assist in the reliable circulation of the water in the boiler and to* 8o relieve the central portion of the boiler and tube sheets. A circulation is eifected up through the central tube or tubes G to the upper water-chamber'also. Any number of brace-rods H can be used, it only being neces- 8 5 sary to have a water-tube G for each to pass through, the said water-tubes doing two duties, allowing water circulation and the passing through of the brace-rods.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure 9o b v Letters Patent, is-
1. In a vertical steam-boiler, in combination with the furnace-chamber, a special combustion-chamber set above said furnace-chamber,
a collection of draft-tubes connecting the two said chambers together, one `or more central water-tubes connecting the upper and lower waterspaces together, and a` collection `of draft-tubes furnishing heating-surface to the upper water-space of the boiler, substantially roo as set forth.
2. In a vertical steam boiler, in combination with the furnace-chamber, a special combustion-chamber set above said furnace, a collection of draft-tubes connecting the two said chambers together, a collection of air-tubes connecting the said specialcombustion-charnber with the outside of boiler, one or more central water-tubes connecting the upper and lower water-spaces together, and a collection of draft-tubes furnishing heating-surface to the upper Water-space of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
3. In a vertical steam-boi1er,iu combination t with the furnace-chamber, a special combustion-chamber set above said furnace-chamber,
a collection of draft-tubes connecting the two nishing heating-surface to the upper ywaterspace of the boiler, `substantially as and for the purposes set forth. Y
4. In a vertical steam-boiler, in combination with the furnace-chamber, a special combustion-chamber set above the furnace-chamber, a collection of draft-tubes connecting the two said chambers together, a central Water-tube connecting the upper and lower water-spaces of the boiler together, a brace-rod passing through said central Water-tube and tying the furnace-chamber crown-sheet to the tubesheet forming the top of boiler, and a collection of draft-tubes furnishing heating-surface to the upper waterspace of the boiler, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
