.To aZfZ 'who/1t t may concern:
Be it. known that I, KAREL Pneus, a suhject of the King of Bohemia, Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, residing at Prague, have lnvented certain new and usefulImprovements in Filters for the Filtration of Sirups and Juices in Sugar-1V orks, (patented in Austrialilungary April 27, 1887, No. 2,155, tome 87, folio 875; in France August 12, 1887, No. 182,291; in England November 9, 1887, No. 15,822; in Belgium April 80, 1887, No. 77,081; in Spain March 20, 1888, No. 12,21O5in Russia July 2O and August 1, 1889, No. 8,875; in Germany March 15, 1887, No. 42,855, and in Mauritius April, 1889;) and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine.
My invention relates to a Filter hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections of this filter as used for siru ps. Fig. 8 and a are details of its frames. Figs and (i are vertical sections of my filter as used for juice, and Figs. 7 and 8 are details of its frames.
Similarletters refer to sim ilar parts th roughoutthe several views.
This filter is composed of a hernieticallyclosed vessel in which there are arranged filtering-frames in greater or less numbers, aceording to the dimensions of the vessel. Each frame is composed of a corrugated or undulated sheet or plate A A', preferably of tinned iron. The dimensions of these frames vary according to circumstances, being generally about twenty-eight inches square. At the bottoni edge and at the two sides the corrugated sheet metal is strengthened by an iron border B of half-round bars bent to a U or may other similar suit-able sha-pe. The upper edge of the corrugated sheet is inserted in a longitudinal slot in a tube C D, forming a communication with a collecting gutter II. The tube O D is provided with a ferrule It, which makes a tight joint by bearing against an elastic washer e. This washer is compressed by a screw F. Each frame is covered with a ltering-cloth. The sirup enters a vessel through a tube G, which is provided with a regulating valve. The sirup then passes through the iiltering-cloth into the grooves or channels in the corrugated plates, whence it is discharged through the tube C D into the gutter II. A tight-fitting closure of any suitable eonstruction enables each ot' the tubes to be closed and the corresponding frame to be changed when required. The residues of the filtration accumulate at the bottom of the vessel and can be removed through a tube J, provided with a suitable valve. Then the filter has been emptied, it can be washed with water introduced through a pipe K, provided with a suitable cock or valve.
In treating certain thick or turb'id liquids, steam-in j eetion pipes and an agitator or stirrer may be provided in the lower part of the vessel containing the filtering-frames.
A steam-chamber Z may be provided around the filtering-vessel to keep it warm, ii' necessary.
Figs. 5, (i, 7, and 8 represent luy filter as used for the iiltering olijuice. In these figures, G is again the tube through which the juice enters. The tubes M and ill serve for the introduction of steam and water to cleanse the different parts inside the filtering-vessel when needed.
Instead of the coiiipressing-screw F,Fig. 1, bolts maybe used, which. are pressed against the tubes C I) by means of spiral springs.
The iiltering-cloth can be washed with water to which a certain percentage of sodahas been added.
In filtering juice much residue is deposited at t-he bottom, inside the filters. For this reason we prefer the convergent form of the bottom, as shown in FigsI 5 and (i. In the deepest part of the bottom a conveyer T transports the residue to the tube J, by whichitis removed.
I am aware that prior to my invention i'ilters for the iiltration of sirup and juice have been made with ltering-fraines inside their vessels. Itherefore do not claim such accinbination, broadly; but
That I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a filter for filtering sirup and juice,
Iiltering-franies composed of corrugated or undnlated plates A A', inserted in tubes C D and covered with filtering-cloth, substantially as set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings.
2. In a filter for filtering sirup and juice, the combination, with corrugated and undulated plates A A', inserted in tubes C D and adapted to receive a filtering-cloth, ferrules E on said tubes, and elastic washers e, of means for compressing said Washers, and a conveyer T, substantially as set forth.
3. In a filter forl ltering sirup and juice, the combination, With filtering-frames composed of corrugated or undulated plates A A', inserted in tubes C D and covered with filtering-cloth, of ferrules E on said tubes, elastic washers e, and means for compressing said washers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a filter for filtering sirup and juice, the combination, with the valved entrancetube G, of filtering-frames composed of corrugated or undulated plates A A', inserted in tubes C D and adapted to receive a iltering-cloth, and stean and Water pipes-M M', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
