and it has for its object to construct a machine for operating cross-cut saws which may readily be transported from place to place and which shall admit of the saw being adjusted so as to out either horizontally or vertically and at any desired height.
IVith these ends in view the invention coir sists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view of the machine embodying my improvements.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the reciprocating slide or cross-head and showing the means for connecting the saw-carrying rod to said cross-head. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating the method of connecting the saw to the said rod.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The frame of myimproved machine is composed of the side beams 1 1, connected at their front and rear ends and near the center by transverse braces, which are designated, respectively, 2, 3, and 4. Transverse bolts or rods 5 also connect the said side beams adjacent to the said braces.
The side beams 1 1 are provided near their front and rear ends with notches or recesses 6, to accommodate the legs 7 and S, which are provided with vertical slots 9, to receive the bolts 10, by means of which they may be secured in any desired position with relation to the frame, which latter may thus be raised or lowered to an extent which is only limited by The lower ends of the legs are connected by transverse braces 11 and the rear legs 8 are provided at their lower ends with wheels 12. of the side beams of the frame are provided with handles 13, to enable the machine to be readily moved like an ordinary truck by simply grasping the handles, lifting the front end of the frame, and rolling it upon the wheels 12.
The side beams 1 are provided near their front ends with boxes or bearings 14 for the main shaft 15, the projecting ends of which are square, as shown at 16, to receive the crank or handle 17, for operating the machine. The shaft 15 carries the fly-wheel or balancewheel 18, and it is provided with a crank 19, connected by a pitman 29 with a cross-head 21, which is mounted to slide and reciprocate upon the guideways 22, which connect the transverse braces 3 and 4 of the frame.
The cross-head 21 is. provided at its front end with a transverse cleat 23,having a central horizontal slot 24 and provided with central vertical flanges or lugs 25. Said cleat is also provided at its front edge with teeth or.
27 designates the saw-carrying rod, which is provided at its front end with an eye or perforation 28 to receive apin or bolt, by means of which it may be mounted pivotally either in the horizontal slot 24: or between the lugs 25 of the cleat 23. It will be seen that when the rod 27 is mounted in the slot 24 it may swing in a horizontal plane only, while when mounted between the lugs 25 it is capable of swinging only in a vertical plane. The rear end of the rod 27 is provided with a disk 29, which is firmly secured and, beyond which it projects onlya short distance, the projecting end being screw-threaded, as shown at 30.
31 designates an arm having a slot 32, by means of which it may be adj usted'upon the front end of the rod 27, where it may be secured by means of a nut 33, clamping ittightly against the disk 29. The outer end of the slotted arm 31 has a screw-threaded pin or stud 34:, upon which may be mounted the saw 35, which is provided with a bail or handle 36, having a perforation 37, to enable it to be fitted upon the said pin or stud.- A nut 38, fitted upon the latter within the bail or hanto that of the rod 27.
It will be observed from the foregoingthat the slotted arm may be readily adjusted in any desired position with relation to the rod 27. The saw may thus be raised or lowered within considerable limits and may likewise be laterally adjusted to place itin the proper position with relation to the work to be done without necessity for changing the position of the frame of the machine. It is also obvious that the saw-blade may easily be adjusted either to a vertical or a horizontal position, as may be desired.
The cross-head 21 is provided with a crosspiece 39, having upwardly-extendin g studs 40, upon any one of which may be pivotally mounted a hand-lever 41, which is adapted to engage the ratchets 26 upon the cleat 23 at the front end of the cross-head. This lever is used only when the machine is used for making horizontal cuts. A coiled spring 42 is then interposed between the lever 41 and the rod 27, which latter is thus forced with an even and regular pressure in either direction, according to the side of the rod on which the lever 41 and spring 42 are placed. The pressure or tension of the spring 42 is regulated by causing the lever 41 to engage one of the teeth or ratchets 20 at a greater or less distance from the center of the cross-head.
43 designates a tool-box having a hinged cover 44 and which is conveniently arranged adjacent to one of the side beamsof the frame for the purpose of holding such tools as may be incidentally required.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The machine may be driven by hand or by any suitable power, the fly-wheel upon the main shaft giving the necessary impetus to cause 'an even and steady motion of the saw. Vhen a horizontal cut is desired, the saw-carrying rod 27 is mounted in the slot 24, and the hand-lever 41 and spring 42 are then employed for the purpose of giving the necessary feed motion to the saw. The latter may be fed in either direction by changing the lever 41 from one side to the other of the rod 27, and considerable range may be given to the feed motion by changing the lever 41 from the outer studs 40 to the inner ones. The height of the cut may be regulated not only by adjusting the slotted arm 31 upon the rods 27, but by raising or lowering the entire frame of the machine upon its legs or supports. The saw may also, when desired, be mounted directly upon the front end of the rod 27, dispensing with the slotted arm 21. Then a vertical cut is to be made, the rod 27 is mounted between the lugs 25, and the feed of the saw will then be caused by its own weight added In cutting vertically, as in cutting horizontally, the slotted extension-arm 32 may be used or dispensed with at will.
While I have in the foregoing described what I consider to be a simple and advantageous form of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein described, but reserve the right to any changes and modifications which may be resorted to Without parting from the spirit of my invention?" Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination of the frame having suitable guideways, the cross-head connected by a pitman with a crank-shaft journaled upon the frame, the cleat mounted transversely at the front end of the cross-head and having a horizontal slot and upwardly-extending vertical lugs, the saw-carrying rod, the connecting pin or bolt and the saw connected adj ustably and detachably with said rod, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the cross-head having the cleat provided with a horizontal slot and vertical lugs, the saw-carrying rod connected pivotally with said cleat and provided near its front end with a stationary disk and having its'projecting end screw-threaded, the
longitudinally-slotted extension-arm having a screw-threaded pin at its outer end, the saw having a bail or handle provided with a perforation, and the clamping-nuts, substantially as set forth. v
3. In a sawing-machine, the combination, with the frame, of a reciprocating cross-head having at its front end a cleat provided with a horizontal slot and vertical lugs, a rod con,- nected adjustably with the said cleat, a longitudinally-slotted extension-arm connected adjustably with the outer or rear end of said rod,and the sa'wmonnted adjustably and detachably at the outer end of said extensionarm, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the frame having suitable guideways, the reciprocating crosshead, the saw-carrying rod connected pivotally with the front end of the latterand swinging in ahorizontal plane, the outwardly-beveled ratchets at the front end of the cross-head, the upwardly-extending studs rising from a cross-bar of said cross-head, a hand-lever mounted interchangeably upon said studs, and a coiled spring interposed between said hand-lever and the sawcarrying rod, substantially as set forth.
5. In a sawing-machine, the combination of the slotted legs or supports, the vertically-adj ustable frame, the cross-head connected by a pitman with the crank-shaft j ournaled upon the frame, the transverse cleat having a horizontal slot and upwardly-extending lugs, the outwardly-beveled ratchets, the pivoted sawcarrying rod, the slotted extension-arm connected adjustably with the latter, the saw mounted adj ustably and detachably at the outer enci of said arm, the hand-lever mounted interchangeably upon one of a series of studs rising from the cross-head and. engaging the outwardly-beveled ratchet-s, and a spring adapted to be interposed between said handiever and the saw-carrying rod, substantially as set forth.
