BRICK-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 447,949, dated March 10, 1891.
Application filed July 31, 1890- T aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH A. FRAZIER and IVILLIAM A. MILAM, citizens of the United States, residing at Corrona, in the county of Lee and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brick-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical apparatus or machine for manufactu ring pressed bricks of substantially uniform texture, density, and dimensions. To accomplish this object our invention involves the features of construction, the combination or arrangemen t of devices, and the principles of operation hereinafter described and claimed, whereby the clay is disintegrated and prepared for its delivery into the path of a plunger,by which the clay is introduced and compacted in brick-molds successively brought into alignment wit-h the plunger for shaping and pressing the bricks.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a brick machine embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4' is a perspective view of a brick-mold.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use our invention, We willnow describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein- The numeral 1 indicates a base-frame having at one end a table or platform 2 and at the opposite end upright standards which support the clay box or hopper 3, in which the clay is prepared for its delivery into the path of the plunger by which such clay is introduced into brick-molds, as will hereinafter appear.
The clay box or hopper 3 is elevated above the base-frame and at its lower end communicates by a horizontal throat or passage-way 1 with a rectangular plunger-chamber 5, which is arranged in a perpendicular position in front of the clay box or hopper and has its lower end or delivery-mouth elevated above the platform a distance coextensive with the height of the brick-mold 6 in such manner wrist- pins 20 and 21.

that the brick-mold can slide horizontallybeneath the plunger-chamber, and when in direct alignment therewith will fill the space or accurately fit between the delivery-mouth of the plunger-chamber and the table or platform 2.
The brick-mold, Fig. 1, corresponds exactly or approximately to the shape of the plungerchamber and is preferably divided into cells 7 for the purpose of simultaneously shaping. and pressing a series of bricks at one descent of the plunger 8.
The base-frame 1 comprises a transverse beam 9, at the center of which is journaled a crown-wheel 10, rigidly secured to the lower end of a vertical shaft 12, that rises through the clay box or hopper 3 to a considerable height above the latter, where its upper end is secured to an overhanging lever 13, which serves for the purpose of attaching a draftanimal to produce what may be termed a horse-power brick-machine. The crownwheel 10 meshes into oppositely-arranged pinions 14 and 15, secured to horizontal transverse shafts 16 and 17, which respectively project upon opposite sides of the base-frame and carry two cranks 18 and 19, which, as shown, are composed of circular disks having The wrist-pin 20 connects by a pitman 22, which rises vertically and connects at its upper extremity with one end of a rocking frame 23, pivotally supported at its center by uprights 24 in such manner that a revolution of the crank 18 oscillates the rocking frame on its pivotal connection with the uprights. The opposite end of the rocking frame is pivot-ally connected with the upper ends of two pendent pitmen 25, which are attached to the plunger 8. The 0 wrist-pin 21 of the crank 19 connects bya pitman 26 with a crank27, provided at the end of a transverse rock-shaft 28, extending from side 'to side of the base-frame 1 and having pendent crank-arms 30, which connect by links 31 with a horizontally-sliding plate 32, moving on the table or platform beneath the throat or passage-way of the claybox 3, the construction being such, as shown, that a revolution of the crank 19 rocks the loo shaft 28 and thereby reciprocates the sliding plate 32.
At the side of the structure, Fig. 1, is a re ceiving-orifice ordoorway 33 for the purpose of introducing the brick-molds 6 lengthwise into a position in front of the reciprocating plate in such manner that the advance stroke of the plate will slide the brick-mold forward beneath the plunger-chamber 5 into coincidence therewith to receive the clay which is moved downward by the descent of the plunger 8.
The vertical shaft of the crown-wheel is provided with a suitable agitator or disintegrator, which, as here shown, is composed of radial arms or knives 34, beneath which and moving in close proximity to the bottom Wall of the clay box or hopper are rigidly-attached feed-plates 35, that operate to impel the clay through the lateral throat or passage-way into the plungerchamber 5.
The agitator arms or knives serve to disintegrate and properly prepare the clay for its subsequent delivery through the throat or passage-Way into the plunger-chamber, where it is acted upon by the plunger and carried downward into the brick-mold 6 for shaping and pressing into bricks of the required form or shape.
The front wall 36 of the plunger-chamber is provided with a lower straight edge 37, which serves to strike off the excess of clay on the top of the brick-mold when the latter is advanced out upon the table or platform.
The brick-mold containing the shaped and pressed bricks is advanced upon the table or platform through the medium of the succeeding brick-mold, which is placed into position to be advanced by the sliding plate 32, so that when the sliding plate advances the rear brick-mold will move the front brick-mold forward onto the table or platform, as will be obvious.
The particular construction described enables us to rapidly manufacture bricks through the medium of horse-power applied through the lever 13 to the vertical shaft 12 of the crown-wheel 10, which latter simultaneously revolves the two pinions 14 and 15, and consequently the congruity of action of the plunger and the horizontally-sliding plate is such as to properly adjust a brick-mold into correct alignment with the plunger and subsequently to move such brick-mold forwardly upon the table or platform and at the same time move another brick-mold into position to receive the clay from the plungerchamber.
emcee The various parts are so constructed and their movements so timed that as the plunger rises the reciprocating plate slides forward to move a brick-mold into correct position be neath the plunger-chamber, and consequently as the plunger descends the reciprocating plate slides backward into proper position for the introduction of an empty brick-mold to be subsequently advanced by the plate.
Heretofore a brick-machine has been composed of atable or platform, a plunger-chamber above the latter, an elevated clay-box having alateral passage-way communicating with the plunger-chamber, a plunger in the plunger-chamber, a horizontally-sliding plate for advancing a brick mold beneath the plunger-chamber, and means for operating the plungerand slidingplate. Such,therefore,we do not broadly claim. Our invention differs from the prior machines of this type in that We provide a pair of independent pinions geared to a crown-wheel below the clay-box and provided, respectively, with a crank-andpitman connection with a plunger-actuating rocking frame and a rock-shaft which moves the moldadvancing plate in a horizontal plane.
Having thus described our invention,what we claim is The combination, with a base-frame having a table or platform, a mold-advancing plate, a rock-shaft connected with said plate, a plunger-chamber above the table or platform, a clay-box having a throat communicating with the plunger-chamber, a plunger in the plunger-chamber, and a rocking frame having at one end a connection with the plunger and at the opposite end a pendent pitman,of a crown-wheel journaled on the base-frame below the clay-box and two independent pinions both engaging the crown-wheel, one of said pinions having its shaft provided with a crank connected to the pendent pitman of the rocking frame and the other pinion having its shaft provided with a crank connected with the rock-shaft for operating the moldadvancing plate, substantially as described.
