W. KERR. EEED WATER HEATER AND PURIPIER EOE BOILERS. No. 447,881. Patented Mar. 10,1891.
WITNESSES:
CZKQW ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
ILLIAM KERR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FEED-WATER HEATER AND PURlFlER FOR BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,881, dated March 10, 1891. Application filed November 6, 1890. Serial No. 370,458. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM KERR, a citi-. zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feedater Heaters and Purifiers for Boilers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a feed water heater and purifier having a tank with an outlet-pipe leading therefrom below the opening of the inlet-pipe, and a series of outlet communicating pipes open at one end.
Figure 1 represents a partial side and partial sectional view of a feed-water heater and purifier embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal sectional view of the device on line a: 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a pipe leading from a supply into the top of a tank B, which latter is provided with a pipe 0, having its upper end open and enlarged, and above the opening of the pipe A, and its lower end leading from the tank and provided with the blow-off cock D. The tank B is also provided with a waste-pipe D, havin g a blow-01f cock E. An outlet=pipe F, having one end inserted in the tank B, so as to lead from the middle portion thereof,- enters the boiler G and connects with the series of pipes H J which extend nearly the length of the boiler, and are located within the waterreceptacle of the same, a short distance from the bottom thereof. The ends of the pipes H J are in communication by means of short pipes K and L. A pipe M leads from' the lower rear end of the boiler and is provided with a blow-off cock N.
In operating the device the feed-water, which may be first heated in any ordinary heater, if desired, is passed through the pipe A into the tank B, where the grease or other scum in the same rising to the surface is carried oif by the pipe C, and the dirt or sediment which settles in the bottom of the tank is drawn through the waste-pipe D by means of the blow-off cock E. The water at the middle portion of the tank B enters the pipe F and is carried into and through the pipes H and J in the boiler G, the heat of the water in the latter heating the Water in thesaid pipes to such a temperature that the dirt and impurities therein are freed therefrom, and, being carried to the rear end of the said pipes, are deposited in the lower portion of the rear end of the boiler, so as to be readily forced out through the waste-pipe M by means of the blow-off cock N, thus purifying and heating the water fed to the boiler. It will be noticed that by having the open end of the outlet-pipe F leading from the middle portion of the tank and the scum-discharge pipe 0 opening above the same the scum or grease is effectually prevented from entering the pipe F, and thereby the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A feed-water heater and purifier consisting of a tank with inlet and outlet pipes,
said outlet-pipe leading upward from Within the tank below the opening of the-inlet-pipe, and a series of pipes, each of which isin communication at one end with said outlet-pipe and open at the other end, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A feed-water heater and purifier consisting of a tank with an inlet-pipe, an outlet-pipe leading into the upper part thereof, leading from the middle portion of said tank, having an enlarged upper end above the openings of the inlet and outlet pipes, ascum-dischargepipe' below the opening of the inletpipe and a waste-pipe, a series of pipes communicating at one end with said outlet-pipe and open at the other end, a boiler in which said series of pipes are located, and a wastepipe leading from the boiler at the end thereof where the open ends of theseries of pipes are located and provided with a blow-off cock, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. Afeed-water heater and purifier having a tank with inlet and outlet pipes and a scumseparating device, and a series of pipes, each communicatingwiththesaidoutlet-pipe at one end and open at the opposite end, said parts being combined substantially as described.
