SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 447,477, dated March 3, 1891.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THEorHrLUs REICH- ARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Towers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.
My invention relates to improvements in building towers; and the object of my improvements is to provide a means whereby the tower may be built to a great height without employing a proportionately heavy and massive frame-work to support the shaft, and
in the manner hereinafter described and by staying it with a system or net-work of steel cables disposed at certain points on the tower, all as will be fully set forth.
In the drawings which clearly illustrate the novel features of my improvements, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tower embodying myimprovements and shown connected with a building; and Fig. '2 is a cross-section of the tower and cables, taken on the line X X of Fig. 1. v

c is the tower-shaft. This shaft extends down through the building and is provided with an entrance d, leading out from the building. The shaft c is hollow, so that ascent may be had through the interior to the top of the same. Above the dome b of the building a, through which it passes, it rises in three sections e, f, and g, the lower one being of uniform diameter, as is also the second one, but the third is made tapering to the top and terminates in a dome-shaped extremity b.
7L is a square platform which intersects the two lower sections of the tower, and which is built and arranged for the purpose of a garden. Above the platform h is built a domeshaped structure t' of glass, which is adapted for a conservatory. The shaft is continuous through the structure fi. A similar platform j and dome-shaped building 7o are built on the top of the second section f. The tapering section g is likewise surmounted by a platform Z and dome-shaped building m, and both of these platforms are designed to be converted into gardens.
In place of the great body and frame-workwhich would ordinarily be necessary in a tower, I build a comparatively slender tower or shaft and employ a system of steel cables connected with it, which form a net-work of stays for the shaft to support it at various points from the bottom to the top.
From the top of the shaft c are suspended cables 71,71., n, and n, each one of which is attached to a corner of the platform j, and is extended down and similarly attached to a corner of the lower platform h, and has its end connected to the building a and anchored in the ground at the point 0. Four other cables p, p, p, and p are attached to the shaft c j ust beneath the second platformj, which cables are made to pass through the lower platform 7L, and are connected and anchored at their ends with the four previously-mentioned ones at the points 0. Below the lower platform h are attached four more cables q, q, q, and q, which four are extended down and united with the other eight cables at the points o, before mentioned. From the points s, s, and s on the shaft c and about midway between the platforms are attached a series of cables t t t, ttc., which are made to diverge or to spread outward from their single point of connection, and are united to the other, cables n, p, and q, that are suspended vertically from the shaft, so that the cables of each series are united and stayed and also connected with the shaft at the points s, s, and s.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tower consisting of a hollow shaft composed of three sections with intervening projecting platforms, dome-shaped structures above said platfoms, and a series of cables connecting the tower and platforms, as set forth. A
