,LYMAN D. M CINTOSl-I, OF RAVENSVOOD, ILLINOIS.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,410, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed December 4, 1889. Serial No. 332.595. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN D. MolNTosH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenswood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vaginal Syringes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part hereof, in which,-I
Figure l is a side elevation with the supply-tube and the discharge-tube broken off. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section offthe parts shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the supply-stem and head. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the drainage stem or tube.
This invention relates to syringes designed for the treatment of the vagina, and to that class of such syringes in which an outer stem or tube and an inner stem or tube are em. ployed as the means for supplying the fluid and the removal thereof; and the object of =the invention is to improve the construction and arrangement of the two stems or tubes and have the operation of'one distinct and separate from that of the other and each ca? pable of performing its office without interfering one with the other; and to this end the invention consists in providing a dischargehead and an inner stem or tube united thereto and an outer stem or tube connected to the dischargehead and surrounding the inner stem or tube and having holes through its body leading into a space between the two stems or tubes; in providing a flexible plug surrounding the two tubes for one end of the plug to close tightly around the inner stem or tube and the other end of the plug to close tightly around the outer stem or tube and have the plug adjustable on the two tubes with the discharge end of the inner stem or tube at all times within the plug, and in the several parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim as new.
In the drawings, Arepresents the dischargehead, made of vulcanized rubber or other suitable material and having an interior chamber a, with discharge-openings a', by
which the fluid will be thrown out in small streams in every direction. y y
B' is the supply-stem, made of vulcanized rubber or other suitable material and formed with the head A, as shown, or the head can be a separate piece screwed or otherwise secured to thc stem. The stem B has apassage b leading into the chamber a of the head A and at the juncture of the head and stein is an enlarged portion formingaring or collar b.
C is the drainage tube or stein, made of vulcanized rubber or other suitable material and having an interior opening of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the ring or collar h', over which ring or collar the tube or stein C is slippedat'the end to locate and hold the tube or stem C around they stem I3. The wall of the tube or stem C is provided with a number of holes c, and between the stem C and stem B is a space c', as shown inv Fig. 2. Y
D is a hollow compressible plug, made of india-rubber or other suitabler material iinpervious to water or other fluid. This plug D at its forward end has an opening for the tube or stem C, and the edge d is made to close tightly around the tube or stem C and form a'elose joint between the tube or stem and the plug at this point, and this plugD at its rear end has an opening for the stem B, and the wall d is made to close tightly around the stem B and make a close joint between the tube or stem B and the plug D at this point.
E is a tube or hose attached to the outer end' of the stem Rand, as shown, in order to retain the tube E in place the end of the stemB has grooves e. This tube E can be connected to a fountain or other supply, or a compressible bulb can be attached thereto for forcing the fluid through the stem B and out at the head A in the usual manner.
F is a discharge tube or hose connected to the plug D by a tube f, which tube is held by a wall f" on the plug, which wall f surrounds and tightly clasps the tube f. The drainage tube or stem C is slipped onto the ring orcollar b' around the stem B, and the plug D is slipped over the stems B and C for the stem B to be clasped by the wall d and the stem C to be clasped by the edge dr The tube E IOO is attached to the end of the stem B and the tube F attached to the tube j", and when the parts are brought together the device is ready for use.
In use the proper length of stem is had by moving the plug forward or back as required, and when thepropcr adjustment is had the stem C and head A are inserted in the Vagina for the plug D to close the mouth of the vagina. The fluid for the treatment desired is forced through the stem B from the tube E and is discharged through the openings a for treating; purposes, and this fluid [lows back and passes through the holes c of the drainage-tube C and enters the space c', to pass into the plug D and be discharged therefrom through the tube F.
The plug D fits and tightly closes the mouth of the vagina, preventiug the escape of the fluid around the plug, and such end is had by the eompressible nature of the plug, and as the fluid cannot escape around the plug it follows that it must pass off through the drainage tube or stem G, passing through the holes c, and by the space or passage c entering the interior of the plug D, to be discharged by the tube E at a point where desired and into a receptacle or otherwise.
The syringe as a whole is very simple, and at the same time will be found elfectual and reliable in use. The movable plug D enables the required length of stem to be easily and readily had, as all that is required for adjustment'is to move the plug forward or back on the stems 13 and C. The compressibility of the plug insures the closing of the mouth of the vagina, and the drainage tube or stem C insures the passagebf the fluid into the plug without leakage, thereby preventing injury to the clothing, and by these several features combined a perfect operating-syringe in all respects is obtained, which can be readily taken apart and put together for cleaning or other purposes or repairs, as all that is required is to slip the tubes E and F off, withdraw the plug D from the stems l5 and C, and slip' the tube or stem C olf of the stem B, which leaves all the parts separated and in condition to be cleaned, and after being cleaned the tube C can be slipped into position and the plug drawn onto the stems B and C and the tubes E and F attached when the device is again in condition for use. The inner stem or tube is longer than the outer stem or tube, and the entering end of the plug closes tightly around the outer stem or tube, while its base end closes tigh-tly around the inner stem or tube, allowing the plug to be adjusted on the two stems or tubes with the discharge end of the outer stem or tube always in the plug, the result being that the iiuid is discharged inside of the plug, no matter what the projection ot' the two stems or tubes `at their operating ends may be, if the outer stem or tube is not removed entirely from the plug at the discharge end.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure b v Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a syringe, ot the head A, having the diseharge-holes a', the supply stem or tube B, united to the head A, the stem or tube C, having the eduction-holes c and connected with the head A around the stem or tube B, and of a less length than the stem or tube B, the eductionspaee c between the two stems or tubes B and C, and reeeiving plug D, closing at one end around the stem B and at the other end around the stem C, substantially as and for the purposes i O. W. BOND, HUGH W. MACLACHLAN.
