MACHINE FOR DRILLING TO PATTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,014, dated February 24, 1891. Application filed December 31, 1890. Serial No. 376,342. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be .it known that I, PAUL PRYIBIL, of the city and county of New York, in the'State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Drilling to a Pattern, of which the followingis a specification. a
My invention relates to an improvement in machines for drilling to a pattern, and, while adapted to use in connectionwith any class elevation. Fig. 2 represents the same in side elevation, and Flg. 3 represents a top plan view showing thehanger in section.
A drill-spindle A is supported in sliding adjustment Within a pair of bearings b and b, fixed to a plate 13. The plate 13 is pivotally secured at or near its lower end to an intermediate plate 0, whereby it, together with the spindle carried thereby, may be rocked into position to present the cutter or drill a obliquely to its work. Provision is made in the present instance for locking the plate B in the desired adjustment by a clamp-screw b which extends through an elongated slot 17 in the plate B, and into the plate C, to which the plate B is pivoted.
The plate 0 has a vertically-sliding movement between a pair of guide-cheeks d, fixed to a hanger D, which forms the support for the drilling mechanism. A clamp-screw E, extending through an elongated slot 6 in the hanger D and into the plate 0, serves to lock the said plate in the desired vertical adj ustment. To the hanger D, preferably near its lower end, as shown, there is secured a bracketarm F, having an adjustment laterally with respect to the hanger, the adjustment being conveniently provided for, as shown in the present instance, by an elongated slot f, formed in the bracket-arm, through which a clamp-screw projects into the hanger.
Through the end of the bracket-arm F there is formed an opening for the reception of a reciprocating sleeve or holder G, within which a guide-pin II is seated' The holder G is I sired extended adjustment by a set-screw h,
extending through the holder into contact with it. The lower end of'the pin II is made conical,as shown at h, for the purpose of rendering the pin self-centering within the ,perforation in the pattern. v
In the present instance Ihave shown asingle' lever for simultaneously lifting the drillspindle and holder G, and to this, end I have provided the lever I, fulcrumed upona link "L, pivotally secured at vits lowerend to a lug t" on the plate 13, thelever Ibeingconnected intermediate of its ends with the spindle. A spring K tends to hold the lever normally elevated. An auxiliarylever Lis fulcrun ed upon a link Z, pivotally secured at its lower end to a lug Z on the bracket-arm Fand connected intermediate of its ends withthe sliding holder G. The free end of the lever L is connected with the operating-lever I, preferably by a flexible connection Z i i From the above construction and arrangement it follows that when the leverlis depressed the spindle A will be lowered, thereby throwing the cutter or drill a into contact with its work, and at the same time the holder G will be free to move downwardly, carrying the guide-pin I-I into contact with one of the holes of the pattern. The guidepin and cutter may be lifted out of engagement with the pattern and work by raising the lever I.
It is obvious that the level-I might be operated by a treadle instead of by the hand by connecting it with a treadle in any wellknown or approved manner, and also that the auxiliarylever L for elevating the guidepin might be operated independently of the lever I.
The table supp'orting'the pattern and work is represented by M, and is mounted upon suitable rollers m, which run upon tracks a, fixed on a sub-table N. The sub-table N is also provided with suitable rollers n, which run upon tracks 0, fixed upon a suitable support 0 and extending in a direction at right angles to the tracks n on the sub-table N. It is intended that the tables M and N shall be mounted so as to move with great facility, and because of the freedom of the table M to move in either direction at pleasure, the pattern P thereon and the work secured thereon in the desired position relative to the pattern may be brought into adjustment so that each one of the holes 1) of the pattern may fall directly beneath the axis of the guidepin ll. hen so adjusted, the cutter or drill a will be in position over the work to form a hole therein corresponding to that hole in the pattern in which the guide-pin H is engaged.
The conical shape of the end of the pin 11 will tend to center the pin within the perforation as the pin is depressed, as it will move the table by its pressure against the side of the hole. The spindle A, which carries the cutter a, is provided with a driving-pulley Q, adapted to be driven by a belt from any suitable source of power. (Not shown herein.)
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a machine for boring or drilling, the combination, with the drill or cutter and means for operatingit, of apattern corresponding to the work to be done, and a guide-pin bearing a predetermined relation to the cutter and adapted to engage the different points of the pattern and thereby determine the position of the cutter relative to the work, substantially as set forth;
2. The combination,with a drill or cutter, means for operating it, and a suitable support for it, of a guide-pin having a predetermined position relative to the cutter, and a pattern and work support, the said Work-support being free to move in differentdirections to bring any point in the pattern beneath the guide-pin, substantially'as set forth.
3. The combination, with the drill or cutter, means for operating it, and a guide-pin having a position predetermined With respect to the cutter, of a pattern and work supporting table mounted upon rollers and free to move in one direction upon a track, and asub-table upon which said track is supported, the said sub-table being free to move upon a trackin a direction at right angles to the movement of the first-named table, substantially as set forth.
-l. The combination,with a suitable support,
a vertically-sliding plate secured thereto, and a laterally-tilting plate pivoted to the vertically-sliding plate, of a drill or cutter and its holder mounted in suitable bearings attached to said tilting plate, alaterally-adj ustable arm or bracket secured to the support, a verticallymovable guide-pin mounted in said arm or bracket, a pattern and work support, and means for adjusting the pattern and work support to bring the pattern into the desired position relative to the guide-pin, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination,with a suitable support,
a drill or cutter, and its holder mounted in said support and having a limited longitudinal movement, of a supporting-arm secured to said drill-support, a vertically-yielding guide-pin mounted in said arm, a lever for operating said pin, and an operating-lever common to the drill-spindle and pin-operating lever for simultaneously operating the drill and pin, substantially as set forth.
0. The combination, with the drill or cutter, its spindle, and the support in which the spindle is mounted, of a supporting-arm fixed in lateral adjustment with respect to the spindle-support, a guide-pin secured in yielding adjustment to the arm and provided with a conical end, a pattern provided with holes adapted to receive the conical end of the guide-pin, and a support for the pattern free to move in different directions with respect to the guide-pin to bring any one of the holes of the pattern into alignment with the guidepin, substantially as set forth.
