Be it known that I, HENRY H. CUMMINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Ups for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved take-up mechanism for sewingmachines, my improved take-up being more especially intend d for use on wax-thread or other machines designed for heavy work.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a side view of a wax-thread sewingmachine embodying my invention. FigsB and 3 are detail side views, partly in section, of the take-up mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a front end view of the latter. Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 5 5 of Fig 4.
A denotes the frame of the machine; 13, the driving-shaft suitably journaled in said frame and provided near its rear end with a grooved cam 12.
The machine herein shown is fully illustrated and described in my application, Serial No. 345,432, filed March 26, 1890, of which this application is a division. It may be stated here, generally, that this machine embraces a rotary shuttle and a hooked needle, both arranged below the work-plate and adapted for forming lock-stitches; but as the general features of this machine form no part of this application they need not be herein particularly described.
N is the take-up lever provided between its ends with a pin or shaft n, which is rigid therewith and which is j ournaled in the frame A. The take-up lever N thus has two arms 011 opposite sides of its pivot or fulcrum, the lower or take-up arm being preferably furnished with a roller of, around which the thread passes, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3, said roller co-operatin g with resistance-rollers 0 on stationary axes attached to the frame A. The upper arm of the take-up lever is provided with a pin m, on which is pivoted an arm or lever m, extending below the fulcrum n of the take-up levcigand to the lower end of which is attached the forward end of a connecting-rod K, the rear end of which latter is secured to the slotted upper end of an operating-lever K, receiving movements from the cam b on the driving-shaft B. The lever m is provided with an arm or portion m formed rigid therewith in any suitable manner. The pivot n of the take-up lever is provided with a hole a through which the thread passes, and forward of said hole on a portion of the take-up lever just below the center of the fulcrum 0f the latter is a bearing portion or, over which the thread runs, said bearing portion being arranged to be engaged by the forward or free end of the arm pressing on said bearing portion or on the thread running over the same will impart a backward or take-up movement to the lower arm of the lever N at the proper time. Thus when the connectingq'od K begins to move back ward, drawing with it the lower end of the lever m, the free end of the arm m is first pressed on the thread lying on the bearing portion 11, thereby clamping the thread, and as the said arm continues its downward or backward movement it forces the lower or take-up arm of the take-up lever backward, thus drawing up the thread to tighten a stitch. As the movements of the take-up lever are thus derived from the thread-clampin g arm 072 it will be apparent that the greater the resistance or the harder the pull of the take-up on the thread the tighter the latter will be clamped between the arm m and the bearing portion n. Thus the thread will always be securely clamped to prevent it from being drawn from the thread-supply when the take-up lever is operating to tighten the stitches, provided there is any resistance on the thread. As, however, the thread is entirely slack when the take-up first begins to operate, it is desirable,in order that the thread will be properly clamped at this time, that the take-up lever should not move too easily, and to this end 1 preferably provide the pivot pin or shaft or with a friction device consisting, as herein shown, of a pin m pressed against m of the lever m, so that the said arm by said shaft by a spring in, attached to the frame A by screws in and in, the latter serving to regulate the tension of said spring, so that the amount of friction on the shaft a may be varied, as may be desired.

Adjustable stops L, attached to the arm or frame A and serving to prevent overthrowing of the take-up lever, are preferably employed.
