' E. C. HUDSON.
SLATE.
No. 446,777. PatentedFeb. 17,1891.
L t I WITNESSES: I INVENTOR:
A TTOHNE YS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA C. HUDSON, OF SEATTLE, VASIIINGTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,777, dated February 17, 1891.
Application filed March 25,1890. Serial No. 345,235. (No model.)
To aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA C. HUDSON, of Seattle, in the county of King and State of XVashington, have invented a new and Improved Slate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved school-slate which is simple and durable in construction and adapted to contain water and sponges to facilitate the cleaning of the slate whenever desired.
The invention consists of a tube held in the slate-frame and adapted to be filled with water. 7
The invention'also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the improve ment. Fig. 2 is a sectional front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of parts of the same on the lineocw of Fig. 1. Fig. 4is an enlarged sectional front view of one upper corner of the slate, and Fig. 5 is a sectional end view of part of the improvement on the line y y of Fig' 1.
The improved school slate A is provided with the usual slate proper B, held in the frame 0, composed of the usual sides 0 0 the bottom 0 and the top 0*. In the outer edges of the two sides C and O and in the bottom 0 are formed grooves G, into which is fitted a U-shaped tube D, held in place by suitable fastenings -E, preferably U-shaped staples, secured to the respective sides and bottom of the slate-frame O. The ends of the tube D terminate in line with the upper end of the slate proper B, and each end of the tube is formed into a sponge-receptacle F, having a perforated bottom G and provided with a cap H for closing the mouth of the said sponge-receptacle F. The latter is adapted to contain a sponge for \vipin g the slate, and preferably of a construction shown and described in the application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 345,234, filed of even date herewith. The sponge is preferably secured byv its neck to the cap H, so that in unscrewing the cap the sponge can be readily removed to be used for wiping the slate.
hen the cap H is screwed or otherwise fastened on the mouth of the sponge-receptacle F, its top is even with the top edge of the top 0* of the frame, as is plainly shown in the drawings. The grooves C inthe sides and bottom of the slate are made sufficiently deep for the reception of the tube D, so that the latter does not project beyond the outer edge of the said sides and bottom, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3. The tube D may be made of rubber, metal, or other suitable material, and is filled with water through one of the sponge-receptacles F, the cap of the latter having been previously removed. When the tube D is filled with water, sponges are placed in the receptacles F, and then the caps are screwed on the mouths of the said receptacles, so that the water is confined in the tube I), and when the slate is laid down it can pass through the perforated bottoms G to the sponges in the receptacles F to saturate the said sponges.
WVhen the operator desires to use one of the sponges, the slate is held in a vertical position, the respective cap II is removed, and the sponge is taken out of the receptable by a pencil or other suitable means and used in wiping the slate in the ordinary manner. hen through using the sponge, the latter is replaced in the respective receptacle II and the cap is secured on the mouth of the receptacle.
In the top C of the slate-frame G is arranged a box I, having a lid J and adapted to receive slate-pencils or other writing material used for writing on the slate. A handle K is also pivoted to the top 0 of the slateframe for conveniently carrying the slate or hanging the same up on a nail.
Havingthus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- 1. In a slate, the combination, with a slateframe provided with grooves in the outer' edges of its sides and bottom, of a V-shaped tube fitted into the said grooves and adapted ICO to be filled with water, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a slate, a tube secured in the slateframc, adapted to be lilled with water, and provided at its ends with sponge-receptacles communicating with the tube, substantially as shown and described.
In a slate, a tube adapted to be secured in the slate-frame and adapted to be filled with water, sponge-receptacles formed at the ends of the said tube and communicating therewith, and a cap for closing the mouth of each of the said receptacles, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a slate, a tube adapted to be secured in thesl'ate-frame and adapted to be filled w ith water, spongemeceptacles formed at the ends of the-said tube, a cap for closing the mouth of each of the said receptacles, and a perfo rated bottom held in each of the said receptaeles, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a slate, the combination, with a slateframeiprovid'ed in the outer edges of its sides and bottom with grooves, of a tube fitted in the said grooves, a sponge-receptacle formed at each end of the said tube and communicating therewith, and a cap for closing the said sponge receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
0. In a slate, the combination, with aslateframe provided in the outer edges of its sides and bottom with grooves, of a tube fitted in the said grooves, a sponge-receptacle formed at each end of the said tube, a cap for closing the said sponge-receptacle, and a perforated bottom held in the said sponge-receptacle, substantially as shown and described.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a slate provided with a tube embedded in the sides and bottom of its. frame, said tube being provided with sponge-holders, a box or compartin ent in the top'of the frame and having a lid, and a handle pivoted to the saidtop, as set forth.
