No. 446,388. Patented Feb. 10,1891.

BALANCED CU LTIVAT O R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,388, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed September 10, 1890- Serial No. 364,587. (No model.)
- of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balanced Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to that class of cultivators in which an arch structure supported by wheels drags two cultivator-beams, each having capacity for a limited amount of independentfore-an d-aft motion, and each beam being so coupled to the arch structure as to permit of the beams being independently swung sidewise or up or down, the driver riding upon the vehicle.
My improvements relate to the system for balancing the supported load upon the wheelaxles, so as to relieve the neck-yoke of improper Vertical strain.
My improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Flgure 1 is a side elevation of a cultivator exemplifying my improvements, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the arch portions at one side of the implement.
Parts not illustrated or specially referred to in the description are to be as usual.
Attention is directed to my patent, No. 329,919, particularly to the clevis set forth therein.
In the drawings, A indicates the tongue of the cultivator; B, the front arch-bar consisting of a cylindrical bar disposed at right angles to the tongue over the plow-couplings and rigidly secured at its center to the tongue; O, suspenders pivoted at their upper ends to this front arch-bar and provided at their lower ends with bearings for the spindles of the plow-couplings, it being understood of course that Fig. 1 is a side elevationof an implement of double character, in which a cultivator-beam is disposed at each side of the tongue; D, the spindles of the plow-couplings journaled in the lower ends of the suspenders; E, the plow-beams coupled at their forward ends to the bases of the suspenders by means of the spindles D, which permit the cultivators to be freely raised and lowered and by means of the usual vertical pivots connecting the plow-beams with the couplingspindles,'so as to permit the cultivators to be swung to the right or left; F, the couplingblock united to the spindle and coupled to the plow-beam by the aforesaid vertical pivot; G, the clevis, like that in my earlier patent, connected to the coupling-block; H, the rear arch-bar disposed parallel with the front archbar and rigidly secured at its center to the tongue; J, standards provided at their upper ends with hearing journaled to the rear archbar and extending downwardly to the centers of the implement-wheels; K, stub-axles secured in the lower ends of the standards and projecting outwardly thereform to receive the implement-Wheels; L, the implement-Wheels journaled on these stub-axles; M, the drivers seat supported on a prolongation of the tongue to .the rear of the rear arch-bar; N, braces attached articulately at one end to the base of the standards J and at the other end to the front arch-bar, the latter attachment being adjustable to permit alteration of the length of the brace; 0, blocks pivoted to the front arch-bar and mortised to receive the front end of the braces N, which slide through the blocks while being adjusted in length; P, a bolt passing through each block and its brace and serving to securely attach the brace to the block, the hracebeing provided with a series of holes for the bolt; Q, chain-eyes near the base of the standards and suspenders; R, chains connecting these eyes; S, chain-eyes in the suspenders above the couplings and in the plow-beams to the rear of the couplings,
T, chains connecting these eyes; U, tie-bars engaging the rear arch-bar at the standards and the front arch-bar at the suspenders; V, I
the vertical pivots of the plow-couplings, and \V the series of holes in the braces for the bolts P.
By an inspection of Fig. 1 itwill be obvious that the tongue and the entire arch structure is supported by the implement-wheels; that the cultivators may be raised or lowered, swinging on the spindles D; that the cultivators may be swung to the right or left, swinging on the coupling-pivots V; that each cultivator may have an independent fore-andaft motion as the horses pull unequally, this motion being permitted by the swinging of the suspenders on the front arch-bar, and that this fore-and-aft motion of the cultivators will be limited by the chains R and 'l, which are sufficientlyslack to permit only of the desired fore-and-aft motion. It will also be understood that the weight of the tongue and the arch structure and the driver is borne by the stub-axles K and the implement-wheels, and that to this downward load thus supported is to be added the weight of the forward part of the beams plus whatever downward pressure the draft upon the clevis may produce. It is highly desirable that these downward strains be met as fully as possible by the implement-wheels in order that the neck-yoke may be as free as possible from Vertical strains. In other words, it is desirable that the load be accurately balanced upon the axles K, which means, again, that the axles K shall be disposed under the center of gravii y of the supported load; but the supported load and also the position of its center of gravity will alter with the weight of the driver and with the downward strain upon the clevis. I therefore provide for a tially asset forth, of a tongue, a pair of parallel arch-bars mounted thereon, suspenders articulated to the front arch-bar,'cultivators with their-beams articulated to the lower ends of the suspenders, standards articulated to -the rear arch-bar,implement-wheels journaled on axles at the bases of the standards, and braces adj ustably connected to the fron-tarchbar and to the bases of the standards.
