FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,416,190, dated February 10, 1891.

Be it known that I, HENRY A POST, of Middletown, in the count-y of Middlesex and State of Connecticut,.haveinvented a new Improvement in Fruit-Jar Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents a perspective view of a j ar-holder embodying my invention, with one jar shown by full and the other by broken lines.

Myinventon relates to an improved fruitj ar holder for use du ri n g the operation of preserving or canning fruit, when the jars are set into a vessel containing water, which is boiled until the fruit is thoroughly heated, the object being to produce a cheap, light, and convenient holder which will interpose a non-conductor of heat between the bottoms of the jars and the bottom of the vessel, whereby breaking of jars is avoided.

\Vith these ends in view my invention consists in a fruit -jar holder having a wooden bottom and upright partition and a wire handle and retaining-loops and in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

As shown, the body of the holder is composed of two parallel stri ps of wood A A, placed side by side, with a space between them to admit the boiling water to the bottoms of the fruit-jars B B, which may be of any ordinary construction, and of a transverse upright partition C, also of wood and situated midway of the length of the said strips, which are secu red to its lower edge. The handle D of the device is formed from a large loop of wire rising vertically above the said partition and having` its lower ends respectively secured to the ends of the same by staples E and bent and entered at their lower extremities into small holes F, formed in the outer edges of the strips A A, before described. The jars are held in place by means of two removable retaining-loops G G, formed of wire and respectively located on opposite sides of the said partition and each terminating at its open end in two upright legs H II, which are slipped through staples I, projecting` from the sides of the partition, two `staples being provided for each leg. These loops are readilyremovable for packing the holders for transportation and as easily replaced. The jars rest upon the ends of the horizontal non-conducting Wooden strips, which hold them out of contact with the bottom of the vessel in which they are placed for heating their contained fruit, whereby they are protected against being cracked by the sudden transferrence of heat to them. Thev are also held well apart from each other by the wooden partition and prevented from coming in contact with each other, even if somewhat shaken by a violent boiling of the water in which they are immersed.

While the particular construction of the body of the holder is Well adapted to the ends in view, it may be changed, as, for instance, by replacing the two parallel strips by a single wide perforated strip of wood. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and combination of parts herein shown and described, but hold -myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall lwithin the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a fruit-jar holder, the combination, with a wooden body composed of one or more strips of wood for the jars to rest upon and an upright transverse partition attached thereto midway of the length thereof, of a long vertical handle having its ends secured to the said body and two retaiui 11g-loops respectively located on opposite sides of the said partition and having their. ends secured to the body, substantially as described.

2. In a fruit-jar holder, the combination, with a body composed of one or more strips of wood and an upright transversepartition attached thereto midway the length thereof, of a Vertical handle consisting of a long loop of Wire having its ends secured/ro the edges of the said upright and two retaining-loops respectively located on opposite sides of the partition and each having' ibs open end termimating in two upright legs, which are slipped through staples projecting from the adjacent sides of thepai'tition, substantiallyas described.
