WEIGHING-SCOOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,179, dated February 10, 1891.

Be it known that I, LEWELEN BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yates Center, in the county of \Voodson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weighing-Scoops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to animprovement in weighing-scoops; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of my invention is to provide a scoop which will weigh the material contained therein, and which will embody structural simplicity and economy. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation with the cover of the casing removed; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cover, showing the gage.

In the drawings, A represents the scoop of the usual form, having an inclined abutting portion 13 on its upper rear side and a hooked linger-piece G rigidly secured to its back portion.

D represents the handle having a Hat inclined abutting plate E on its end, which is arranged to engage with theabutting port-ion of the scoop when the latter is drawn up. The end of the handle has an arm F extending out therefrom, on which is rigidly secured a casing G, formed with an opening 9 in its lower edge and two curved pointer-openings g in its sides. In this casing is pivoted at h a scale-beam ll, having pointers h2 on its outer end and hooks 72, 011 its opposite end.

Below the pivotal portion of the beam adjacent to the pivot is a coiled spring H secured to the beam and casing.

I is the scoop-support extending up from the scoop through the opening in the bottom of the casing, its upper end being provided with lugs which rest in the hooked portion of the beam.

By the above construction it will be readily seen that as the operator forces the scoop into the material be tightly grasps the finger-piece C, drawing the abutments together and making the same substantially rigid. As the scoop is raised the weight of the amount of material is indicated on the scale-plate on, the sides of the casing. This is accomplished by releasing the finger-piece and allowing the scoop to swing on the beam. The tension of the spring is such that the weight is exactly indicated.

I am aware that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A weighing-scoop comprising a scoop having a finger-piece placed at an angle thereto on the rear end, a support attached near the center on top of the scoop extending up into the casing, having lateral lugs near its upper end, a scale-beam pivoted in the easing having a bifurcated end, in which rests the lugs on the support, the beam having its other end extending through an opening in the casin g and formed into an indicator, and a spring for normally holding the indicator in its lower position, substantially as described.

2. A weighing-scoop comprising the handle having an inclined abutment on its inner end, a casing secured to an upward extension of the handle, a support having a scoop se cured to its lower end, said scoop having a finger-piece on its rear end, and mechanism in the casing for supporting the scoop and indicating the weight of the contents, substantially as described.
