SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,470, dated January 2'7, 189 1..
Application filed May 29, 1890. Serial No. 853,632. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. HESS, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Foristell, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missou ri, havei nvented certain newand useful Improvements in a Cough-Cure; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention-has relation to fluid medicine compounds or mixtures for the alleviation and cure of affections of the chest and lungs; and it consists in a decoction formed of several herbs and combined with sugar, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
To prepare this compound or cough-sirup, Itake one-half pound of mullein-leaves, (Verbascmn.) one pound of pennyroyal, (Hedeoma 2o pnlegioz'des,) one quarter of a pound of sage,
(Salem) four ounces of savory, (Samreiag These ingredients, with the exception of the sugar, are placed in a porcelain kettle with sufficient water to cover them and are boiled for two or three hours, and the decoction formed therefrom is then taken out and strained and the sugar put in, after which it is boiled down to a proper consistency, when the bulk will have been reduced to one-quarter. 'lhe herbs en tering into the above compound are used when green; but, it necessary, they can be Weighed While green and dried before the decoction is made therefroih.
Dose: For an adult I recommend in case of severe coughs and colds a tablespoonful every hour.
I claim- A medical compound or cough-sirup made up of a decoction of mullein-leaves, pennyroyal, sage, and savory, with water and sugar, in about the proportions set forth.
