.42. 21 Zlorney NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE \VILLIAM MURRAY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES BUTT, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,452, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed May 3, 1890- Serial No, 350,479. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Regulators for Bicycles and Tricycles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view showing the device applied to the bicycle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention.
This invention relates to' an improved speeding or regulating attachment for bicycles, tricycles, &c.; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as willhereinafter appear.
In the drawings, A refers to a preferably angular bar or lever made in sections cast attheir inner meeting ends with coupling or clamp sections a, hinged together at their lower edges and held upon the axle B of the main or drawing wheel of the machine, as shown, or otherwise. Upon this section al lesaid lever or bar.
ably pendulum shape and are designed to 5 assist the movement of the machine as the same is propelled, more especially in ascending short or slight inclines or ascents in the road. In traveling up inclines of the character just named the Weights are adjusted to 40 and held at the outer ends of the lever or bar, while in decending declivities or hills the Weights are adjusted and held close to the driving-wheel axle to avoid their affecting the speed of the machine, thus serving to 5 regulate the speed or motion of the latter.
It is obvious that bymeans of this attachment not only is the action of the machine assistedin climbing or making a short ascent, but it is enabled to make greater speed on 50 the level.
Having described'this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The attachment for bicycles, comprising the 5 5 sectional bar or lever having the inner or meeting ends provided with the hingcd-together coupling-sections adapted to be held upon the driving-wheel axle, and the adjustable weights arrahged upon or carried by 60 said lover or bar, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM MURRAY.
