EDVARD CHARLES DAVIS ANIXTIIOMAS BALDXVIN, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
TELESCOPIC JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 1?atent N0. 4A5f110, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed August 2, 1890. Serial No. 360,827. (No modeli) Patented in England July 17, 1890, No. 11,156.
bearing date July 17, 1890,) of which the fol-' I5 lowing is a specification.
'lhisinvention relates to the telescopicj oints [or rods, tubes, billiard-cue telescopes, inusic-stands, and other articles; and the invention consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a broken sect onal elevation of the improved joint. Fig. 2 is asection on the line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the end collar or cap. Fig. 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of the operative part of the device. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 3 1, Fig. 1. Fig. (5 is a plan of the gripping-fingers, and Fig. 7 is an elevation of the inner ring.
In the drawings, the letter a indicates the inner sliding tube; 1') b, collars formed upon or attached to the inner tube a; c 0, double smwlterfs, which allow the collar b to expand and act as a steadyingcollar; cl, the outer tube, in which the collars h and l) with the tube (6 slide freely. The letter e indicates a short tube, one end of which is formed with taperedgripping-fingers c e. The tube a is soldered to the tube d, as shown in the drawings. The lower edge is of this tube forms a shoulder to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the tube a, the contact of the collar 1) with the shoulder 70 preventing such withdrawalf ff are two inclined or helical slots out through the tubes (1 and e. to fit the outside of the tube cl, its outer end being tapered so as to act as a wedge upon the tapered gripping-fingers e e when required, and thereby cause them to grip the tube a and lock it in any required position.
g is a collar partly formed h h are two lugs pivoted to the collar 9 at h h. These lugs slide in the slots ffwhen the collar 9 is turned by hand, and thereby raise or lower the collar g. The letter i indicates any suitable external covering for the tube (1. mis a collar for securing the material forming the covering marked 11, an dit is a cap for a similar purpose, having perforations marked 0 to reduce weight.
From the foregoing it will be understood that by turning the coned collar g in the direction of a right-hand screw the coned collar travels downward, and this motion causes the conical portion of the collar to compress the gripping-fingers cc. The friction arising from this compression firmly locks the tube a in any required position. By turning the (501- lar g in the opposite direction it recedes from the gripping-fingers e (2, and thus removes the frictional contact with the inner tube a. The tube a may be then drawn outward or pushed inward, as required, and again looked, as before described.
In adapting our invention to billiard-cues the tube (0 is extended to the usual length by means of a light tapered rod of the usual form fitted to its outer end; but such billiard- 8o cues possess the additional advantage of being adjustable in length.
Our invention is applicable to many articles which require telescopic and locking action, and to any number of joints in the same article.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is In the construction of telescopic joints, the combination, with the tubes to be joined, of 0 a coned collar provided with studs engaging with inclined slots in the larger tube, and a series of gripping-teeth formed on the end of the larger tube and adapted to be pressed by the coned collar against the smaller tube, substantially as described.
Dated this 18th day of July, 1890.
ED\VARD CHARLES DAVIS. THOMAS BALDWIN.
