TIMOTHY L. BOSART, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE AOORN STEAM BOILER AND HEATING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJ USTABLE STOVE-BAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,421, dated January 2'?, 1891.
Application filed April .281 1890.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that 1, TIMOTHY L. Bosanr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Stove- Backs, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to that class of devices known as adjustable stove-backs, which are used to replace broken and worn-out fire-backs in stoves before the stoves themselves are fully worn out.
It consists in certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of parts, whereby a simple, inexpensive, and easilyoperated device is produced, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and ou which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a top edge view of a fireback embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a rear elevation; Fig. 4, a horizontal sectional view, looking downwardly from the dotted line a 4 in Fig. 3;, and Figs. 5 and 6, transverse vertical sectional views, looking toward the right from the dotted lines 5 5 and G 6, respectively, in Fig. 3.
In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the main portion of my improved lire-back; B, wings adapted to be moved endwise on said main part, and thus vary the length of the structure, and O plates adapted to be moved transversely of said main part, and thus vary the width of the structure.
The part A is, in the main, a plain plate formed of cast-iron having a curved-over upper portion and provided with hook-like projections a a', under which the wings B pass and whereby said wings are secured thereon.
The wings B are secured, as just stated, to the main part A by the hook-like projections a d', which, as shown most plainly in Fig. G, hook over the edges of said wings, and thus keep them in contact with said main part. These wings have arched or raised portions b, in the crown of which are slots, (which run transversely of said plates,) and in the open spaces underneath said raised or arched por- Serial No. 349.731. (No model.)
tions are placed nuts for the purposes which will be presently stated. Said wings, when the back is reduced to its smaller length, apn
length of the struct-ure to any usually-desired 6o extent.'
The plates O are, in the main, plain plates and rest against the wings B. They have raised portions c, corresponding to the raised or arched portions in the wings B, and which 6 5 iit over them, as shown most plainlyin Fig. 4l. As also shown in' said figure, the form of one of these plates is somewhat different from that of the other, so that one of said plates fit-s over the other. small bolt-holes, and are secured in position by the bolts c', which pass through said holes and through the slots in the raised or arched portions of the wings B and engage with the nuts c2 in the spaces thereunder. readily understood,by screwing up said bolts the wings B and plates C will be clamped tightly together'. The bolts c are formed of justthat length so that when driven in fully their points will rest against the main plate 8o A and act as set-screws, forcing the wings B slightly away from said main plate A and clamping them under the hook-like projections d a', thus preventing any movement of any of the parts on the adjacent parts when these screws or bolts are fully driven in. Thus,
by the manipulation of these two small bolts only all the parts are secured firmly together or loosened (so that they may be adjusted) without requiring any other operation, which, 9o
as will be readily seen, is very simple and easily done. One of these plates is provided with a slot s and the other with a projection n o, which enters said slot, (see Fig. 3,) whereby the movement of said plates is guided and limited.V It will of course be understood that the vertical slots might be in the plates O and the holes in the wings B, if desired, or slot-s might be in both without departing from my invention, and the slots s and projection 0 Ioc might also be reversed.
In certain forms of stoves there are bolts or rods which extend up in the center or at the corners, and which are in the way of placing Said plates are provided with 7o As will be 75 new fire-backs in position. This requires that some provision be made to permit said rods or bolts to pass through the structure, as said fire-backs are always bent over (or given substantially a half-arch) at the top, and said bentover portion will in such cases lcome in con tact with said rods or bolts, and thus prevent the new back from being,` fullyput into place. To obviate this I have provided at the center of the main plate A in its arched or bent-over portion and at the ends of the wings B in their corresponding` portions breaking-grooves g, by means of which fragments are permitted to be broken out at these points, as may be required and as will be readily understood, when the backs are used with stoves of the character stated.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-h 1. The combination, in a fire-back, of a main .part provided with hook-like proj ections, two longitudinally-movable wings secured to said main part hy said hook-like projectionsand two vertically-movable plates secured to said wings by bolts, the points of which are adapted to be forced against said main part, and thereby not only secure said plates and win together, but secure said wings to fixed position on said main part, substantially as set forth.
The combination, in an adjustable fireback, of the main part A, the wings B, secured thereto and provided with raised or arched portions Z), having slots in the crowns thereof, plates C, havin g correspondin graised portions, bolts c, passing through said plates and the slots in the wings B, and nuts c2, arranged in the open spaces under the raised or arched portions h, with which said bolts engage, substantially as shown and described.
The combination, in an adjustable fireback, of the main part A, the wings B, and the plates C, which extend inwardly from the ends and overlap each other at the center of the device, one of which plates has a slot s and the other a projection o, whereby the endwise movement of said plates is guided and limited, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 23d day of April, A. D. 1890.
TIMOTHY L. BOSART.
