To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. BATES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The obj ect of my invention is to so construct a furnace for a steam boiler, and especially for a boiler ot' the locomotive type, as to in* sure the effective combustion of the gases arising from the fuel; and this object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the iirebox of a boiler of the locomotive type, illustrating my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 et, Fig. l; and Figs. et to 10 are detached perspective views of the parts comprising a hollow partition forming part of my invention.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, A represents the usual waterjacket-ed casing of the fire-box, B the crown sheet, and B the tubes, the rear wall of the fire-box having the usual feed-opening d. There are, however, in my improved furnace two fire-places, arranged one on each side of a hollow partition E, which is by preference composed of slabs of fire-brick or other refractory material constructed and fitted together in the manner hereinafter set forth, this partition being mounted upon watertubes b, extending from the front to the rear wall of the fire-box. Each fire-place also has a grate composed of similar water-tubes d. The hollow partition E is composed of a top plate D,a bottom plate F, opposite side plates G,a front plate H, and a rearV plate J, the top and bottom plates having dovetailed recesses f for the reception of dovetailed projections g which thus aid in retaining the partition in its proper lateral position. A key-block 7c is inserted in the recess h above the tongue h', and the rear face of said plate .I has recesses m formed therein, so as to provide for the passage of air between the said plate .I and the rear wall of the fire-box.
Air enters the hollow partition E through tribes n in the front and rear walls of the firebox and through openings n in the front and rear plates of the partition, air also entering the partition through an opening p at the rear end of the bottom plate F. The air heated in the partition is permitted to escape therefrom laterally through openings s in the side plates G and vertically1 through openings t in the top plate D. Hence as the gases arise from the fuel in cach of the side fire-places heated air mingles with said gases, and further supplies of heated air are projected into the gases as they unite over the top of the hollow partition, the consequence being that thorough and effective combustion of gases is insured.
In the upper portion of the hre-box is a deflector ill, composed of slabs of fire-brick or other refractory material mounted upon water-tubes zo, extending from the front wall ot' the fire-box rearwardly and upwardly to the crown -sheet B, the purpose of this deiiector being to cause the products of combustion to seek the upper rear end of the fire-box before they can pass through the upper portion of said re-boX to the tubes B. This concentration of the products of combustion in the rear portion of the fire-box insures the effect ive mingling with the same of the hot air de rived from the hollow partition. As the pro 'ducts of combustion sweep rearward in order topass round the rear end of the deiioctor M,
they are met by further volumes of heated air ascending from the passages m, formed in the front plate J of the partition, so that ample supplies of oxygen are furnished to insure the combustion of all the gases arising from the fuel.
The openings n may, if desired, be provided with suitable dampers to regulate the inlet of air to the hollow partition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, in a fire-box, of the l'OO fire-places, located side by side, and the hollow partition interposed between said tire-places and extending only part way to the top of the combustion chamber, said partition havingv inlets for receiving air and outlets for discharging the heated air into the products of combustion arising from the fire-places, substantially as specified.
2. Theeombination of theiire-plaees,loeated side by side, and the hollow partition interposed between the fire-places and extending only part way to thetop of the Combustionehaniber, said partition having inlets for the air and side and top outlets therefor, so as to cause the escape of the heated air both laterally and vertically into the products of coinbustion from the {ire-places, substantially as specified.
3. Theeombinationofthetire-plaees,located side by side, the hollow partition separating the fireplaces and having air inlets and outlets, and a detleetor in the upper portion of the fire-box above said partition, substantially as specified.
4. The Combination of the two {ire-places, the hollow partition *separating the same and having air inlets and outlets, and Vertical airheating` passages formed in the front plate of said partition, snbstantiallyas specified.
5. The combination of -the two fire-places, the hollow partition separating` the same and having air inlets and outlets, and Water-tubes serving to support said partition, substantially7 as specified.
