SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,369, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed September 22, 1890. Serial No. 365,698. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROMAN B. FYLER, a citi zen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usef ul \Vashing-lhlachine, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, andexact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appcrtains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to provide a convenient and efficient machine for washing clothing and fabrics; and said invention consists in a mechanism the elements in which are constructed and organized for operation as explained in the following description, the particular subject matter claimed being hereinafter definitely specified.
In the drawings, Figure l is a half side half vertical section view of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section at line 00 Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section at line y y, and Fig. 4. is a bottom view.
My improved machine, in general terms, consists of a wheeled carrier or frame having mounted therein a revolving brush, gearing for imparting motion to said brush, and grooved rollers for retaining the fabric in place, said carrier beingprovided with a handle or handles to facilitate passing it back and forth over the garment or fabric to be cleansed; also, where desired, with suitable means for effecting adjustments of the parts and with guards for giving protection where necessary.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the frame, composed of two side pieces connected by cross-bars or transoms a, and having suitable handles A, supported between projections at the extremities of the side pieces, or attached in any convenient manner.
B indicates a rotatable cylindrical brush arranged between the side frames in transverse position and having its journals or axle supported to turn in bearings b, which are adjustable up and down in guideways or recesses in the side frames. Springs 0 are provided for pressing the bearings upward, while thumb-screws C are fitted in the frame above the bearings, by means of which the brush can be adjusted to occupy higher or lower position in relation to the planeupon which the machine stands. The brush-journals extend through the bearings and have gears B fixed to their outer ends at the exteriorof the frame for the transmission of rotary action to said brush.
D indicates the supporting or carrying wheels mounted at the exterior of the frame on suitable axles or on shafts (Z, that extend through the body. Said wheels have attached to their inner side gears D, that mesh with the gear B of the brush B. By means of said gears the brush is rotated as the machine is run back and forth on the carrying-wheels. Said wheels D can, if desired, be provided with rubber tires D and can be corrugated 011 the periphery if in any instance preferred. The journals of the wheels D are formed in the frame and are preferably non-adjustable.
F F indicate circumferentially grooved rollers, preferably of wood, disposed at the opposite sides of the brush adjacent to and axially parallel therewith. Said rollers are journaled in bearings that are adj ustably supported in recesses formed in the frame. Springs e are provided above the bearings f for pressing the rollers downward. The rollers F are free to rotate in accordance with the movement of the machine.
A guard consisting of a series of bars or curved wires L is arranged beneath the brush B, as indicated. The ends of said wires are attached to transverse supporting-bars J, the ends of which are secured in recesses in the side frames. If preferred, said wires L can be extended so as to have their ends secured in the transoms or end frames a, in which case the wires could pass across the rolls F in the grooves thereof, as indicated by dotted lines at L. A sheet-metal guard K is arranged over the brush to prevent its throwing water by rapid rotation thereof.
In the operation the garment or fabric M to be washed is spread upon a flat surface, as the board or table T. \Vater and soap are applied thereto in such quantities as may be desired, and the machine is rolled backward and forward over the fabric by the aid of the handle or handles A. By means of the gears D and B rapid rotary motion is imparted from the traveling wheels D to the brush B, which re tates in a direction opposite to that in which the machine is moved and acts upon the fabric to remove the dirt in a very quick and thorough manner. The grooved rolls F serve to press upon the fabric and hold it in place in front and rear of the brush, while the guardwires L serve to prevent the edges of the fabric from becoming rolled up or raised from the table by the action of the brush as it passes over the same. The handle-supporting bars a can be extended to any desired length to give a longer or shorter reach, and, if preferred, the machine can be made with a single handle instead of two, as herein shown. In the present instance the handles are supported by integral extensions on the side frames; but when desired the handle-extensions can be made as a separate piece from the side frames and attached thereto in any suitable manner.
Iclaim as my invention herein to be secured by Letters Patent- 1. In a washingmachine, the cylindrical rotatable brush and a circu mferentially-grooved roll at each side of said brush, in combination with-afralne, traveling wheels supporting said frame, and gears connecting said traveling wheels with said brush for imparting rotative movement thereto, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of thebrusl1,t11e grooved rollers at the opposite sides of the brush, adjustable bearings for said rollers, the frame having slots in which said bearings are supported, and springs for pressing downward said bearings and rollersand the wheels and gearing for operating the brush, substantially as set forth.
, 3. Thecombinatiomwith the revoluble brush 13, its supporting-frame A, mounted upon travelin g wheels D, and the brush-operating gears D and B", of the guard-wires L, arranged across the face of the brush and having their ends supported by transverse bars fixed in said frame at either side of said brush, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination of the frame supported on carrying-wheels D and having handles A, the revolnhle brush B, its adjustable bearings 1), spring 0, and thnmb-screw O, the brush-operatin g gears Di and B, the circumferentiallygrooved rollers F F, the adjustable bearings f and springs e for said rollers, and the guard L beneath said brush, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
