GATE.
No. 445,343. Patented Jan. 27,1891.
4B l '@m/M UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
WILLIAM COOPER, OF TRAYERSE CITY, MICHIGAN.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,343, dated January 2?, 1891.
Application filed September 8, 1890. Serial No. 364,358. (Nomodel.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. COOPER, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
. siding at Traverse City, in the count-y ot Grand Traverse and State ot Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Gates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the aocompanying drawings.
My improvement in gates consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of my gate. Fig. 2 is a detail broken perspective view of the same; and Fig. is a similar view, the parts, however, being extended, and the' lower or base rail being omitted from the section A.
My improved gate is arranged to permit its lower section to be swung up or eleva-ted and secured above its normal position-that is, farther above the ground either for ingress or egress of animals orto avoid snow and ice and allow its upper section to be moved upward and downward at convenience.
In accomplishing these objects I construct the gate in sections A, B, and C, thelowe'rsection B being hinged to the lower ends of the vertical or upright pieces of section C and section A for increasing the height of the gate, being adjustable on section C bythe metallic guides I) and thumbscrews E. The lower section when lowered is retained in place by its own gravity, and when swung up from the ground is secured by means of hook a on seetion B and metallic eye I) in section C. The gate-section C is secured to a gate-post, as shown, by means of strap-hin ges or in any ordinary manner. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim ism A gate comprising three sections, the lowest orbottom section being hinged to thelower ends of the vertical pieces of the middle sec tion and the top section carrying guides sliding on said vertical pieces of the middle section and adjustable thereon by thumb-screws, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IYILLIAM COOPER..
