H STAPLES DEVICE FOR REGULATING THE THROW OF CONNECTING RODS.
;N0. 445,323. Patented Jan. 27, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IIIRAM STAPLES, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR REGULATING THE THROW OF CONNECTING-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,323, dated January 27, 1891.
Application filed May 2, 1890. Serial No. 350,353- (No model.)
To all. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM STAPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Battle lreek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Regulating the Throw of ConnectingRods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for regulating the throw of connecting-rods; and it consists in the details and particular combination hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing is an elevation showing the device in its longest position in full lines and in its shortest or closed position in dotted lines.
A is a support for my improved regulating device, and, as shown, is in the form of a cross. This support may be made a part of other frame-work or may be made independent thereof, as is most convenient; It must of course be in the range or plane of the connecting-rod the throw of which is to be regulated. I have shown this frame or supportas having guide grooves or channels aa' for the reciprocating rods.
B is an ordinary connecting-rod. This rod is provided with a cross-head I), suitably supported by braces b b.
B is a reciprocating extension of rod 13.
The cross part a of the support A cuts off the guide-grooves a a and furnishes a stop for both of the reciprocating rods.
C C are levers pivoted to the cross parta at any desired point between their ends, suitable perforations being provided in said levers, as shown.
0 c are links connecting the outer extremities of the levers C C and the extension-rod B; and c c are also links connecting the inner or adjacent extremities of said levers with the cross-head on the connecting-rod 13.
Because of the form assumed by the links,
levers, and braces of my dcvieewhen extended, and for convenience I have designated my new invention a compound diamond lever- 1 brate on their pivots, and through links 0 c to thrust the extension-rod B outward.
As the levers are pivoted nearer one end than the other, the thrust or movement of the extGl1SlOD POl is greater than that of the con necting-rod; The length of movement, however, may be regulated to suit every desired range by arranging the pivots of the levers toward or from or at the middle thereof. In this way'any desired range of throw may be provided and may be changed to suit diiferent conditions, notwithstanding the stroke of the engine is constant and too great or too little. A strap or bar D is arranged in front of the pivoted levers and supports the pivots of said levers. \Vhen the levers O C are adjusted farther from or nearer to their mid-length, they are also correspondingly adjusted as to their distance apart by properly inserting their pivot-bolts in holes 0 shown in elevation in the cross part a and strap D.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a support, levers adjustably connected to said support, a connectin g-rod, links connecting one extremity of the pivoted levers and the connecting-rod, an extension-rod, and the links connecting the outer extremities of the levers and the extension-rod, whereby the length of throw of a connecting-rod may be regulated and adjusted, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix m y signature in the presence of two witnesses.
IIIRAM STAPLES.
